The men’s mullet — and how to actually pull it off.

The mullet is having a moment, and this time it isn’t ironic. What started as a throwback joke has settled into one of the most-requested men’s looks around — softened, modernised, and a long way from the “business at the front, party at the back” caricature. If you’ve been thinking about one, here’s an honest look at what the modern mullet actually is, whether it’ll suit you, and how to ask for it so you get the version you had in mind rather than the one from 1985.

What the modern mullet actually looks like.

The mullet’s core idea hasn’t changed — shorter at the sides and front, longer at the back — but the execution has moved on entirely. Today’s version is softer and more blended: the harsh line between short and long is gone, replaced by a gradual transition, with texture through the top and length at the back that reads as deliberate rather than grown-out. Think less “hockey player,” more the textured, lived-in look you’ll have seen on musicians and footballers over the last couple of years.

It also sits on a spectrum. A subtle mullet is barely a mullet at all — just a bit of extra length at the back on an otherwise normal cut. A full one commits properly to the shape. Most men land somewhere in between, and where you sit on that scale is the single most useful thing to work out before your appointment.

People use these names interchangeably, but they’re not quite the same, and knowing the difference helps you ask for the right thing. A mullet is defined by the short-sides-long-back contrast. A wolf cut is shaggier and more layered all over — a mullet crossed with a shag, with heavy texture through the crown. If you want the length-at-the-back statement, that’s a mullet. If you want all-over shaggy texture and movement, that’s closer to a wolf cut. Plenty of cuts borrow from both, which is exactly why bringing a picture matters more than knowing the right word.

Will a mullet suit me?

More people than you’d think, but it’s not universal — and this is where an honest conversation beats wishful thinking. Mullets work with a lot of hair types, and they’re particularly good on hair with natural texture or wave, where the length at the back falls with movement rather than sitting flat. If your hair is curly or wavy, a mullet can look genuinely brilliant, because the curl does half the styling work for you.

Face shape plays a part too, as does how much styling you’re realistically willing to do. A good stylist will tell you honestly whether the version you’ve got in mind will suit you, or whether an adapted take would land better — which is what the consultation at the start of your appointment is for. We’d rather talk you into the right mullet than let you walk out with the wrong one.

How to ask for one.

Three things make the difference between the mullet you wanted and a near miss:

Bring pictures. This matters more for a mullet than almost any other cut, because the word covers such a wide range. Two or three reference images tell your stylist exactly where on the subtle-to-full scale you want to sit, far better than words can.

Be honest about styling. A mullet with texture and length needs a little product and a couple of minutes most mornings to look intentional. If you want something you can wash and leave, say so — the cut can be adapted to be lower-maintenance, but only if your stylist knows that going in.

Think about upkeep. The shape lives in the contrast between the short sides and the longer back, so it needs refreshing every few weeks to stay sharp — a bit more often than a grown-out cut. Worth knowing before you commit.
