Hair Growth FAQ's
How fast does hair grow?
If you took a sample size of about 100 people of all ages, hair textures, diets and lifestyles, on average, human hair will achieve growth of about half an inch (1.25 cm) per month. Half an inch of growth will equate to roughly six inches (15 cm) per year. That being said, because this is an average factors such as genetics, age, gender, and hair type will need to be considered. Some important factors to note:
- Men’s hair tends to grow slightly faster than women’s.
- Curly hair may appear to grow slower because of its texture and shrinkage, even though the growth rate is the same. Curls tends to disguise growth well.
- To a lesser extent you will see a very marginal increase in hair growth inn warmer climates due to blood circulation from warmer weather.
What factors support hair growth?
You can’t affect your genetics however you can create an environment that that promotes healthier hair which can in turn support hair growth. Here are some helpful and advantageous to supporting hair health:
Your scalp: A healthy scalp surprisingly is under appreciated and one of the most vital factors to strong hair. This can consist of regular cleansing, avoiding product build up (hair sprays, creams, gels etc) which can tie in to regular exfoliating to ensuring your scalp isn’t blocked which can hamper growth.
Diet: We always assume that our diet affects our weight or our fitness. In the same way that a poor diet deteriorates our skin, weight and how we feel, it too affects our hair. Hair is made of keratin, a protein, so ensuring your diet includes sufficient protein is essential. Nutrients like biotin, zinc, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids are also vital for healthy hair. A diet rich in leafy greens, nuts, fish, and eggs can work wonders. Most diets don’t tick every box and whilst supplements can be supportive, creating an environment which is nutritional is best advised.
Hydration: Hydration is largely misunderstood and the balance to strike is actually more challenging than people may appreciate. Hair on both ends of the spectrum is highly common, yet healthy hair with the right pH is actually rare. Dehydrated hair or hair containing too many oils are both extreme and neither are supportive to healthy hair. Different hair types require different products and routines to ensure efficiency but the key is balance. If you are unsure, speak to your stylist and they will work with you to establish a routine that works. Treatments also can work well.
Be gentle: Excessive or aggressive brushing, pulling, tight hairstyles, and frequent use of heat tools can lead to breakage. Use a wide-tooth comb and avoid over-styling to protect your hair.
Do split ends affect hair growth?
Technically, split ends don’t slow down hair growth at the root, but they can make it seem like your hair isn’t growing. We regularly see clients with hair colour citing that their hair doesn’t grow and yet they return 8 weeks later for hair colour. If hair doesn’t grow, salons would go out of business! Hair grows, it just splits if not cared for. Split ends travel up the hair shaft, causing breakage and leading to shorter, damaged strands. If hair is splitting the first course of action is to establish the ‘why?’. In 90% of cases a regular haircut and an intensive salon treatment remedy the issue.
Does hair colour or bleach affect hair growth?
Hair colour and bleach won’t directly impact the growth rate, nor will any hair product usage. Not one of these processes don’t affect the hair follicle. However, they are important factors which can overtime weaken hair
Conclusion
While the average hair growth rate represents approximately 0.5 inches every month, there are some controllable which can support your hairs health and subsequent growth through proper hair care and nutrition. Regular haircuts, a healthy diet, and gentle handling can minimise breakage, allowing your hair to reach its full potential.
Finally, if you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
