Shag Haircut FAQ's
What is a shag haircut?
The shag haircut originated in the 1970s and has evolved somewhat since its inception each time with a fresh, modern twist. The classic shag is characterised by its many layers, which are cut at various lengths to create volume, texture, and movement throughout the hair. The fringe is often a key feature, typically cut in a wispy, feathered style that blends seamlessly with the rest of the layers.
One of the defining characteristics of the shag haircut is its versatility. It can be tailored to suit different hair lengths from short to medium or long. Not only that but it can be styled to appear edgy and punk-inspired to softer and more mainstream depending on your personal style.
Is there only one type of shag haircut?
The short answer is no. The long answer requires more detail. Whilst not an exact science, different hair lengths benefit from different things so I have broadly summarised this below:
- Short Shag: The short shag is a playful, low-maintenance option perfect for those who love an effortlessly cool look. This version of the shag typically falls just above or below the chin, with lots of choppy layers and a textured fringe
- Medium Shag: The medium shag offers a bit more length while still maintaining that signature shaggy texture. This style usually falls around the shoulders, with plenty of layers to add movement and dimension. It’s a versatile length that can be styled in various ways, from soft and wavy to straight and edgy.
- Long Shag: For those who prefer to keep their length, the long shag is an excellent choice. This version of the shag maintains the long layers while adding plenty of texture and movement throughout the hair. The result is a voluminous, dynamic style that works well for both straight and wavy hair types.
- Curly Shag: The curly shag is a fantastic option for women with naturally curly or wavy hair. The layers are cut to enhance the curl pattern, reducing bulk while adding shape and definition. The result is a wild, carefree look that celebrates your natural texture.
Pros of getting a shag haircut
- If you want something different with the benefit of volume, this is it. One thing you can guarantee is that you won’t blend in with the rest of the crowd. So if you have fine hair, the volume and texture achieved will work well with fine or flat hair. The choppy layers create movement and body, giving the hair a fuller appearance.
- To some extent it can be applied to most lengths, and face shapes. It too can be applied to different personality types. For example we get a lot of ‘rockers’ whereas we get ladies or even gents in professional roles that want something less edgy, but take the shag haircut as inspiration for something of a change.
Cons of getting a shag haircut
- While the shag can be adapted for different hair types and different personalities, it may not be the best option for all. For example, clients with very thick, coarse hair or extremely curly hair may find that the layers create too much volume or make the hair far more difficult to manage than previously. Conversely, those with very fine hair may struggle to achieve the desired texture and volume without the help of styling products. It’s somewhat of an in-between haircut.
- With the ‘right’ hair type it can be left, however in my experience and in most cases there is some styling require to maximise its benefits if you want to achieve the best results.
Conclusion - Is the shag right for you?
The shag haircut is standout. If you want to express your personality and style in the form of a haircut, it’s highly attractive. It is however important to consider if you want to make that sort of statement and whether your hair type is well suited before taking the plunge!
If you’re ready to embrace the shag and even if you’re unsure, book a consultation with your hairdresser to discuss the best approach for your hair type and face shape. For more information, call Wisteria Avenue or send us a WhatsApp. Mobile users can scroll up to hit ‘Send a WhatsApp’.
