Hair Extensions Maintenance and Aftercare FAQ's
What are the types of hair extensions?
The number of types of hair extensions can seem overwhelming from the benefits to the drawbacks, costings, why you’d choose one application type above any other, what the maintenance and aftercare look like and everything in-between! There are more types of application, however for ease we have detailed the three most popular, below:
Keratin Bonds:
- How They Work: Keratin bonds attach small sections of extensions to your natural hair using keratin-based adhesive. This option blends seamlessly and is highly durable.
- Upkeep Requirements: Keratin bonds are somewhere in the middle when it comes to maintenance. Very simply the upside of keratin bonds is that they are discreet and when the hair grows (we expect hair grows 0.5 inches each month) therefore after a couple of months (three months is average) you will likely need to revisit your salon for intervention. This typically consists of removal and reapplication.
- Aftercare: Remember, hair extensions are real hair, however its hair which isn’t ‘connected’ in the same way as your virgin hair therefore it’s likely to be more prone to damage. Try to avoid too much direct heat, use gentle products and brush gentle to avoid tension where the extensions are bonded to your natural hair.
- Salon Maintenance: Every 3 months, your stylist will remove and reapply the extensions. This is usually done across a couple of appointments (removal followed by caring for them, preparation and then reapplication. It can be done same day, however for ease and time most clients have a preference for returning 24-48 hours later as the preparation is time consuming once removed.
Nano Rings:
- How They Work: Nano rings are tiny metal rings that are applied to small sections of your natural hair. Theyβre a popular choice.
- Upkeep Requirements: Nano rings are similar insofar as they require reapplication around a similar sort of timeframe.
- Aftercare: Try to avoid tangling and when detangling, avoid aggressive brushing. Avoid applying oil or heavy conditioners near the rings, as this can cause issues.
- Salon Maintenance: To ensure that the extensions are maintained, the nano rings are removed and reapplied. This is arguably more straightforward than tape-ins and keratin bonds.
Tape-In Extensions:
- How They Work: Tape-ins use adhesive strips to apply extensions close to the root area.
- Upkeep Requirements: Tape-in extensions typically need to be repositioned every 8 weeks. They are far more gentle however there is an increased likelihood that they may drop out therefore it’s important that they are managed carefully.
- Home Care: Avoid tugging, brush carefully and be mindful of the tape-in pieces when washing.
- Salon Maintenance: Every 8 weeks, tape-ins are removed and re-taped higher up to match your hair growth. The reapplication is quick (the quickest of any form of application) however the removal does take some time and it’s recommended to do this over two days.
What are the essential hair extensions aftercare tips?
Regardless of the type of extensions method, the key to maintaining is as follows:
- Avoid tangling:Β There are brushes designed exclusively for hair extensions which can be effective. However a soft brush can also work well – Try to avoid being too aggressive.
- Avoid heavy oils: While conditioning is vital, heavy products can interfere with bonds, rings, or tape adhesion.
- Minimise heat: Extensions are generally more delicate than natural hair, so using heat sparingly will help maintain their integrity.
What's the best option for you?
Choosing the right extensions depends on your lifestyle, time, personal preference, prioritise and budget:
- If youβre looking for volume and durability: Keratin bonds offer durability and volume. They are ideal is you have fine hair, need something which can withstand ‘life’ and whereby you won’t need to think twice about them. They are by no means bad for your hair either; either we typically advise following an aftercare plan and giving your hair a rest after 6-9 months for a few weeks. Here’s how hair extensions can work on fine hair.
- If you prefer flexibility and quick maintenance: Nano rings aren’t that ideal for fine hair although the upside is again durability and cost above tape-ins.
- If you want something gentle: Tape-ins are the best. However they are far less discreet than other methods and they do have a tendency to be less versatile which is a drawback. That being said, they are very quick to apply.
Conclusion
