Defining Curls FAQ's
What are defined curls?
Defined curls are just that; curls that are clearly and consistently formed minus the element of frizz that can arise with dry curls. When curls are defined they can look as we expect them too and they are showcased arguably in their best light presenting as much healthier, organic and well-styled.
Whilst defined curls can be styled in such a way that their is a very deliberate intention, this doesn’t always need to translate as uniformed and structured. Rather every curl can still present as unique and when styled this can be anything from conservative to edgy and when using the correct products alongside the best haircut for you, it could be viewed that getting definition from your curls is a way of maximising your look.
If you want to create more definition for your hair and need help with maintaining your hair, here’s some of our Stylist top tips for curly hair.
Do defined curls mean better curls?
In some cases defining your curls are exactly what they need however not all curls will benefit from the same curly hair product nor will they be suited to lots of definition. For example certain curl types (looser curls most typically) would benefits from a product that encourages aa softer and more gentle look whereas tighter curls can really benefit from greater definition.
The key to curly hair is moisture and if you can successfully overcome the obstacle of hydration, this is more than half the battle when styling your curls. Defining your curls is just one form of hydration and whilst this offers a certain look, it does too address the need to target your curls with the moisture that it craves. The second trick is to ensure that the product or style you are going for isn’t unnecessarily bringing out the worst in your curls by weighing them down, complements your hairs natural texture and ensures that your curls continue to look their best.
Not sure what you need? Here’s the three most important things you need right now for curly hair!
What products help to define curls?
It’s important to first establish that your ‘normal’ hair products are formulated for straighter hair types rather than curls and therefore if you are able to get hold of a your curly hair product of your choosing, this can be supportive for your curls. We are a JOICO salon (this means we use JOICO branded products) and whilst they have a small range of curly hair products, we specifically stock Only Curls as our go-to range for curly haired clients. Curly products are typically more dense than other products and most serve to hydrate curly hair more effectively whilst too offering a more effective hold, and protection to define curls properly.
In-salon we use leave-in conditioners, curl cremes, curls gels, and curls mousses formulated specifically for curls. Your product of choice will be somewhat dependent upon your curl type. A tighter curl might need more hold and hydration (curl gels are really effective at creating definition in this instance), while looser curls or waves may benefit from lighter cremes and mousses that won’t weigh the hair down. You could even mix it up by using a curl creme followed by a curl gel.
How can you achieve defined curls?
Achieving defined curls will be different for different curl types however if you are defining your curls for the first time there are some basic introductions which will greatly support your curly hair journey. (Ideally) using a shampoo and conditioner for curly hair, begin by washing and conditioning your hair. Once finished, don’t rub it dry and instead gently scrunch with a towel to reduce frizz.
Products are best applied to slightly damp hair and this can be applied using your hands. For example if you are starting with a curl creme, scrunch your curls and try to ‘shape’ your curls. You can too work the product through with your fingers or ideally something like a Denman brush.
The final thing that you will need is a diffuser. Diffusers are very cost-effective and most are a universal fit meaning they can attached to most hair dryers however it is worth establishing this as some hair dryers will have a slightly wider head than others. Diffusers allow you to dry hair with more control and prevent your curls from creating frizz so the trick is to dry, style and leave a small percentage of moisture still in your hair. If doing so, use the medium heat and medium speed setting to enhance your curls. Here’s some more tips for blow drying curly hair.
Conclusion
Defining your curls and knowing when they need defining is really key to getting the most from them. Investing in curly hair products can be really beneficial both in terms of washing, conditioning and your styling. The formulation of curly hair products makes them appealing given they offer much more effective and efficient hydration for curls whilst too offering longer lasting styling.
If you need help identifying your curl type, what your curls need or understanding which product(s) would best serve your curl pattern and style, don’t hesitate to ask your Stylist at your next curly hair appointment. A curly haircut or in-salon styling session can make a huge difference to how your hair performs, and the right professional support can take the guesswork out of your routine.
If you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
