Blow drying curly hair FAQ's
How can I prep my curls for blowdrying?
When we think of styling we usually think of hot tools like hair dryers, straighteners, curling tongs and hair spray! However the secret to great curls starts in the shower which is one of the most under appreciated steps to working with curls. What most people do is pivot to any shampoo and conditioner, however most ‘standard’ products won’t prove effective on curls and rather they will serve to dehydrate them, so effective curly hair specific products will cleanse and conditioner far more effectively leading to greater frizz-resistance and an all-round more effective blow dry. As a point of reference, we use Only Curls in-salon, a curly hair specific range of products.
Dependent upon what you hope to achieve with your hair, products such as curl cremes, curl gels or mousses can prove extremely effective offering both lightweight and frizz-reducing results for more defined curls. Not sure what you need for curly hair? Here’s three essential items you need!
How can I blow dry my curls at home?
The short answer is you can blow dry your curls at home with relative ease. The most efficient solution is utilising a diffuser, they’re cheap and most are universal so they can attach on the end of most hair dryers. The attachment when used correctly dries hair more gently without creating frizz and more importantly you can maximise your curl pattern in a big way.
if you want to maximise your curls, start by dividing your hair into manageable sections. Place each section into the diffuser, and lift it gently toward your scalp. Use medium heat and medium speed to protect your curls from excessive heat. Too little leaves too much moisture whereas too much heat leaves your hair looking frizzy.
When diffusing hair, the optimal use of a diffuser is to leave about 10% moisture in your hair (use the diffuser until you’ve dried roughly 90%) as the remaining moisture will eventually dry whilst locking in your curls. What’s better is that before using your diffusing, apply your product of choice for a better end result. Once finished diffusing, try a lightweight serum or oil to add shine and tame flyaways. A routine is really important. Here’s an easy-to-follow at home routine for styling your curls.
How is curly hair dried in a salon?
Just because you have curly hair, doesn’t mean it always needs to be curly! In-salon we can help you to enhance your natural curls or if you want something different, we can show you! For more tips, here’s how you can style curly hair.
- Can you blow-dry curly hair straight? Yes, most blow drys like this will last a few days too.
- Is it possible to create waves instead of curls? Absolutely! It doesn’t always need to be curly. You always have that option if you want something different.
How often should I cut curly hair?
The absolute ideal is 8 weeks with ‘worst case scenario’ being every three months. This helps achieve the best curls without sacrificing on your health of hair. If you have long curly hair, here are some haircut options for you.
What are the best ways to keep my curls hydrated?
Curls naturally require more moisture than straight hair, so hydration is key. There are some great curly hair specific masks which can support your curls too. They are reasonably cost-efficient and when used once per week and these can help greatly.
Styling products can aid your curls too throughout the day. Depending on your lifestyle and how you want your hair to look, curly hair products help with hydration so that your hair looks in great shape from morning to evening. Definition is really important with some curly hair styling products able to deliver more effectively than those designed for straight hair.
How often should I wash my curls?
Curly hair tends to be drier as the natural oils that our body produces are less able to travel along curly hair so we need to be careful with both our product usage and the frequency at which we wash curly hair. Too often canΒ strip it of its natural oils whereas too little can leave it looking lifeless. A couple of times per week is more than sufficient in most cases.
Conclusion
If you have curly hair and aren’t sure where to start, our salon of curly hair specialists are here to help. Our typical curly haircut appointments work through curly specific cutting techniques, how these differ, how to improve your existing curly haircut, product usage, which products to use, how to replicate your in-salon curls at home and how to dry and style your hair both in-salon and at home!Β
