Curly Hair Types FAQ's
What type of curls are there?
Curly hair can typically be identified as wavy, curly, and coily (or a combination). The identity of curls aare be further broken down into subtypes based up the type of curl and its tightness.
Wavy hair (also known as ‘type 2’) takes the form of gentle flowing waves and this type commences from ‘type 2A’ which carries the loosest waves with a slight bend, followed by ‘type 2B’ which features more defined S-shaped waves and finally ‘type 2C’ which is the most textured form of wave showcasing stronger waves and some spirals.
Secondly, curly hair which is identified and better known as ‘type 3’, has a more distinct curl pattern than wavy hair and is arguably the most common. Your typical type 3A curls are bigger, more voluminous and looser, often forming well-defined loops. Conversely type 3B has tighter ringlets, while type 3C features dense, springy corkscrew curls with more volume.
Finally coily hair (think very small and tight curls) are recognised as ‘type 4’ which consists of springy, well-defined coils, type 4B has a more zig-zag pattern with less uniformity, and type 4C is the tightest curl type, often forming dense, shrink-prone curls with less visible definition.
How do I know which type of curls I have?
There are some really helpful diagrams which outline the different curl pattern alongside helpful descriptions. Often times it can require a fresh hair wash to reveal your true curl pattern (frizz and curl products can sometimes mask this). It’s too worth mentioning that seeking to identify whether your hair forms soft waves, spiral curls, or tight coils will give you an idea of where it fits within the curl classification system whether type 2, 3 or 4 etc.
The other aspect to consider is your hair density, porosity, and thickness which too play a role in how your curls behave. Most typically and commonly with longer and thicker curl, you will see a mix of curl types on different areas of their head which showcase a combination of straight, tighter and looser curls through. If your curls appear stretched or less defined, it could very simply be the weight and length of your hair fighting gravity. A haircut and some supportive styling can really help to better define curls.
Can my curl type change?
Curl types tend to change as a result of gravity (for longer and thicker hair types) where the hair can become weighted presenting the illusion of looser curls. Curls can too change dependent upon colour services received, products, hormonal changes, menopause or even puberty.
Over time heat styling is secondary factor which can negatively influence curls in the form of repeated use of straighteners in particular high temperature (especially without the use of heat protector) can greatly weaken the curl pattern, leading to looser or less defined curls and unruliness.
Can a Stylist help me understand my curls?
If you are booking a hair appointment and your appointment specifically relates to your curls, your Stylist should outline what is best for your curls from your haircut to the type of products used all the way to shaping and everything in between! Understanding your curls can greatly enhance your self image and achieving the most from your curls.
Curly hair requires specific cutting techniques to maintain shape and volume. Some stylists may prefer to cut curls dry to see how they naturally fall, while others may use a wet-cutting method depending on the hair’s needs. Understanding your curl type will also help with product selection, as different curls benefit from varying levels of moisture, hold, and styling methods.
If you are unsure about your curl pattern or how to care for it, booking a consultation with a stylist who understands curly hair can make a big difference and a few salons will have an in-house curly hair specialist.
Conclusion
As curly hair specialists for many clients embracing their curls is very new experience and as such there is lots to learn about your curly hair! A great starting point is to build a relationship with a curly hair specialist who fundamentally understands the behaviour of curls and knows what can work for you. In many cases clients won’t always understand their curls or what their curls can really look like. Curls can change over time dependent upon the frequency of haircut, length and thickness of hair, hormonal changes, medication or similar, however if you are in doubt about your curls, your hair texture or your curly hair behaviour, your Stylist will be able to help guide you in a holistic way to ensure your healthy curls.
