Men's Hair System Application FAQ's
What products are used to apply a hair system?
The two primary methods of securing a hair system to the scalp are adhesives and tapes (or a combination of the two). Both options cater to different lifestyles, hair systems and in many cases the pH or your skin (certain skin types require a different type of application) ensuring they application type is able to provide a strong hold. Your primary options will in one way or another differ in durability, comfort, and how often they need reapplication.
- Liquid adhesives: Adhesives are essentially a form of glue which is safe to be applied to your skin for an extended timeframe, securing your hair system in place whilst not damaging your hair system. Different adhesives can be used dependent upon your hair system/skin.
- Double-sided tape: Tape is arguably the more popular choice given its ease of application and removal in-salon. Tapes typically leave less residue behind when cleaning the hair system and scalp which can offer greater benefit at your next maintenance appointment.
How are hair systems applied?
The application process when applying a hair system is by no means fixed, but here’s how long they take to apply. As a general rule of thumb these are the typical steps taken:
- Scalp prep: The scalp must be clean, dry, and free from oils. A stylist will often use a scalp protector to create a smooth surface for better adhesion.
- Applying the adhesive/tape: Adhesives and tape are used to firmly secure your system in place. An initial cleanse is essential and this allows a clean base to work from whilst ensuring the adhesives/tapes secure more securely. Hair systems are designed to remain in place.
- Positioning the hair system: The hair system is carefully aligned to ensure a natural-looking fit. This step is crucial, as an incorrect placement can affect how natural the hairline appears.
- Securing the system: Certain systems actually require support from you the client to avoid the system ‘rolling back’ on itself. Once positioned, the hair system is pressed down firmly to ensure a strong bond with the scalp. Any adjustments are made at this stage to guarantee a seamless blend.
- Styling: To avoid a contrast or step between your natural hair and your system, post application your Stylist will both cut and style your system whilst blending your system into your natural hair.
Are the adhesives or tapes comfortable?
In short once you are used to hair systems they won’t play much of a role either way however some clients develop a preference for one above the other (or both). In 99% of cases the difference maker will boil down to your choice of base and whether that is skin, lace or a combination of the two.
Can I apply the system myself?
Some clients to, however it isn’t for the faint hearted. In short, it’s very difficult to do yourself and those that do opt to apply a system themselves do so once they have seen a professional in action on many occasions. The haircut will most definitely be a step too far and it’s worth ensuring that the back and sides are cut by a professional Hair Stylist that crucially has experience with hair systems.
Self-application of a hair system really does requires practice and a lot of watching what happens in-salon. Mistakes are easily made and getting it right can be the difference between a great finish and a less natural finish.
If you’re considering applying it yourself, it’s worth noting how long men’s hair systems last.
Conclusion
Men’s hair systems are applied using either liquid adhesives, tapes and sometimes both. These products are designed to provide secure and long-lasting hold, both of which are highly effective. The application process isn’t entirely straightforward and the preparation, choice of adhesive/tape and scalp sensitivity can make all the difference.
