Lace and skin men's hair system FAQ's
What is a lace hair system?
A lace hair system is the first of two options when talking about men’s hair systems. When we talk about lace or skin, we are referencing the underside of the hair and the material which makes contact and is applied to your scalp. Lace systems are made with a fine, breathable mesh material that allows air to pass through, making it one of the most popular choices. Moreover some systems incorporate both lace and skin for more niche and combined benefits. The lace systems are usually made from either Swiss or French lace, with Swiss lace being finer and more delicate, while French lace is slightly thicker and more durable.
You will typically see greater benefit in lace systems given they are more breathable and for some clients there is a more natural look overall. That being said if you do opt for a lace system they are more delicate and they can deteriorate faster. Unlike skin systems which are quite durable, lace systems are more porous which may not hold water or sweat quite so well. That being said, a lot of clients do find them comfortable and the preferred choice as a result.
What is a skin hair system?
A skin hair system from the underside of the hair has a base made from a thin layer of transparent material that mimics the appearance of the scalp. Unlike lace, which is woven, the skin base is a solid sheet, and hairs are injected or knotted into it to create a realistic look.
Skin systems in particular should be your go-to for durability if your primary motivation is longevity, a secure fit and something that you can rely on. Whereas lace systems don’t have a smooth surface, on skin systems they allow for stronger adhesive and they bond with your scalp more efficiently which offers men with active lifestyles the comfort in knowing that a skin system will withstand most activities. It’s too worth noting if you have a shorter haircut, hair systems are highly desirable.
The main downside to skin systems is that they are less breathable than lace. The skin can ‘trap’ heat so whilst they are ideal in many ways, than can become less comfortable than lace in certain climates.
What are the differences between lace and skin systems?
There are advantages and disadvantages to both systems. Below we weigh up which system (lace or skin) comes out on top depending upon your preferences.
- Appearance: Lace systems provide a softer, more natural hairline, making them ideal for those who want to expose their forehead. Skin systems, however, create a realistic scalp effect, which is great for men who prefer a clean and polished look. Skin look great on shorter hair styles too.
- Breathability: Lace systems allow more airflow, making them more comfortable, especially in warm weather. Skin systems, on the other hand, can feel warmer as they don’t allow air to pass through.
- Durability: Very simply, skin systems are generally more durable, as they are less prone to tearing. Lace systems require more delicate handling to avoid damage.
- Adhesion: Skin systems adhere more securely due to their skin-like surface. That being said, lace systems are easier for your Stylist to clean and maintain than a skin base.
- Hairstyles: Lace systems work well for longer styles and those requiring a natural-looking hairline, while skin systems are better suited for shorter styles and those wanting a more defined look.
Do lace and skin systems cost the same?
Skin and lace systems are nearly identical in their cost. Whilst some cost slightly more than others, broadly skin and lace bases are identical in cost. Here’s how much hair systems cost.
The main cost contributor to consider is any customisation. Where most clients don’t necessitate it, options such as a double crown, side parting or multiple colours can result in an increase given your hair system will require bespoke changes and will need to be ordered specifically.

Conclusion
In most cases if you are new to men’s hair systems, your Stylist will be able to support you in any decision by supporting you in weighing up and pros and cons when assessing your lifestyle, how active you are, what your motivations are and any anticipated ongoing maintenance. Whilst lace systems offer breathability and a natural-looking hairline, skin systems on the other hand provide durability and a secure fit, making them a great choice for those who want a low-maintenance option with a natural scalp effect.
