How long do men's hair systems last? in Abingdon
For men experiencing hair loss, there are two priority options; these are surgical or non-surgical hair loss solutions. However, in recent years increasingly more men are choosing hair systems above hair transplants for their ease of application, same-day turnaround and with no downtime or required recovery, they are understandably a popular choice.
If you are considering a hair system it’s too important to consider the maintenance and frequency of replacing your hair system as they don’t last forever. If you have a hair system or you’re considering one for the first time you may be thinking about how long men’s hair systems last and when you should looking into getting a new one. In our daily blog we consider the lifespan of a hair system, the factors that contribute to wear and tear, and the signs that indicate it’s time for a replacement to ensure you get the most out of it.
If you are considering something different, visit our men’s hair system service page. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705

Lifespan of men's hair systems FAQ's
How long do men's hair systems last?
There are a lot of different types of hair system, however more broadly these can be identified by lace, skin or a combination of both. Depending on your system and your maintenance routine/lifestyle will determine how long any system will last. On average most systems should last between three and six months. Other systems will last between four and six months however six months should be very achievable if you consistently manage your maintenance around your new system both sensibly and appropriately. Here are the typical systems:
- Lace systems: There is no reason why a lace system cannot last up to six months. These systems are more susceptible to damage than skin, given they favour breathability above strength however if well maintained and cared for you should be fine.
- Skin systems: Skin systems are arguably less comfortable yet they favour strength. Most systems even when they could be cared for better will typically last for a minimum of four months.
- Hybrid systems: These will on average last for between three and six months and are again dependent upon your frequency of maintenance, what you do with is and manage it between appointment.
It’s too worth noting that these are averages and not guarantees. Proper maintenance, including regular cleaning, careful attachment, and using the right products, are essential requirements for maximising both your spend and its use. Whilst your chosen salon will source the best hair system for you if you’re wondering how to purchase a hair system, here’s how.
Why do men's hair systems need replacing?
Over time, men’s hair systems will deteriorate. There isn’t an exact set number of months whereby a system will need replacing and they do vary from client-to-client although the expectation is that timeframe will typically represent somewhere between three and six months. There are factors which will contribute to their deterioration and you will be able to assess this yourself. Several factors contribute to the need for a replacement:
- Hair shedding: Whether you are brushing, styling, washing or similar, your system will gradually shed the number of hairs thus slowly reducing over time,
- Base wear and tear: The material of the base can weaken, stretch, or tear, especially in lace or ultra-thin skin systems.
- Colour fade: Over time you will see a gradual fade in the colour. This won’t happen quickly and it will help sticking to the aftercare advice given to you post appointment. If you do experience fade there are several reasons why colour it won’t work.
- Adhesive build-up: This is one of the reasons that removal in-salon is really important. When adhesives build up it can become not only uncomfortable but it will begin to damage the base over time. This can largely be tackled by returning (ideally) every three weeks, worst case scenario every 6 weeks.
Can you continue using the same hair system?
It really depends on your level of sensitivity. In 99% of cases your hair system will likely no longer be passable nor seamlessly blend in. The number of hairs, the deterioration of colour and how it feels to wear will cause discomfort and issues with appearance which is perhaps the biggest obstacle. In most instances once the six month mark passes even in the event that your hair system has been well cared for you will begin to notice a contract between your natural hair colour on the back and sides of your head when compared to your hair system which will inevitably lighten. They too shed too many hairs and there is no guarantee that it will be secure enough to have the confidence to wear it 24/7. Hair systems stay on too so it’s important to consider the impact of maintenance and your overall appearance beyond six months.
How can you tell when a hair system needs replacing?
When it comes time to replacing your hair system, you will begin to recognise the early symptoms of your hair system experiencing early deterioration. Here are some clear signs that it’s time for a new one:
- Excessive shedding: This will present in the form of thinning hairs or even bald patches.
- Base Damage: Lace systems will tear while skin systems will peel. You may too notice the overall structure feeling weaker and perhaps more lightweight.
- Dull/faded colour: Over time systems will lose their colour irrespective as to how much you have spent, the quality and any factor which references the product. Once the colour fades, it will no longer appear well blended nor discreet.
- Adhesion: Your stylist will spend additional time attempting to properly secure your system even with fresh adhesive.
If you’re ready to replace your men’s hair system, here’s how much they can cost.
Conclusion
Men’s hair systems are largely more cost effective than surgery and the results offer a greater guarantee although they don’t last forever. That being said by following our aftercare instructions sensibly, there is no reason why your hair system cannot last for up to six months.
Important factors to consider with your first hair system are exposure to styling products, heat styling, a lack of gentle care when styling, excessive use of shampoo’s can all be contributing factors to excessive wear and tear. If you’re considering a hair system or need advice on when to replace yours, a professional hair system stylist can guide you on the best options for maintaining a natural appearance.
