Lightening Hair with Tint FAQ's
What is a tint?
A tint refers to a block hair colour that is applied from roots to ends of hair covering every hair strand. The type of hair colour (permanent, semi-permanent or demi) doesn’t influence the term nor does the chosen shade. Tints come in a variety of shades, from natural tones to more vibrant colours. They can be used to darken hair, refresh faded colour, enhance shine, or subtly adjust tone.
Can tints lighten hair?
There is a rule of thumb with hair colour and that is that is colour cannot lift colour. For example if you hair is dyed black and you seek a natural brown, applying a brown tint cannot be achieved through direct application. Tints can lighten natural hair to some extent when applied to virgin hair (hair without hair colour), but they have limitations
How can I lighten hair?
If you’re looking to lighten your hair previously coloured hair, there are several options beyond tinting:
- Bleach – Bleach is the obvious and sole choice, however it can be utilised in different ways dependent upon what you seek to achieve, your hairs condition, your budget and anticipated frequency of appointment. For example for an overall softer and more subtle lift, bleach baths are both a gentle and effective solution for removing colour buildup enabling your stylist to revisit with the application of a slightly lighter shade. Bleach in its simplest form removes pigment (colour) and all your Stylist is doing is controlling the strength and level at which the bleach is being utilised.
- High-lift tints – High-lift tints are a stronger version of permanent colour designed to lift natural hair by up to four levels. They are a good option for clients with virgin hair who want a lighter result without full bleaching. However, they are not suitable for previously coloured hair as per any form of tint.
- Balayage or highlights – Whilst neither will lighten every strand of hair, highlights are sometimes used to gradually lighten hair with the expectation of more than one appointment required to achieve more radical results.
Will tints damage my hair?
It depends on two factors; are you misusing tint and what are you using? If used appropriately and recognise what should and shouldn’t be used, tints can be applied for years without issue. More commonly, at-home colouring and stronger products which are applied and ‘overlapped’ with regularity can cause issues. Most issues typically stem from inappropriate use of tints and this can require salon intervention to correct colour or remedy damaged hair. To maintain the health of tinted or lightened hair:
- Use professional colour and do not tint over existing tint regularly nor for the same level of processing time. This will quickly result in dry and damaged hair and eventually hair that ‘rejects’ hair colour.
- In-salon treatments are much more intensive and great options if you seek an injection of moisture.
- Minimise heat styling and if using apply heat protector first.
- Haircuts (worst case scenario) once every three months.
Conclusion
While tints can provide subtle lightening for virgin hair, they are not strong enough nor designed to lighten previously coloured hair. There are much more effective alternatives to lift previously coloured in relation to bleach baths, highlights, balayages or even scalp bleaches. Each offer their unique benefits and an experienced Stylist will be able to help you make an informed decision.
