Balayage maintenance FAQ's
How long should a balayage last for?
Balayage is a sun-kissed hair colour option that requires little upkeep making it a popular choice, particularly for busy clients unable to visit the salon regularly and even first-time clients looking for their first colour service. Results typically last anywhere from three to six months before a follow up appointment is needed. This is because unlike traditional foil highlights, which require regular root touch-ups, balayage grows out naturally and most balayages are applied in sections anywhere (on average) from the bottom of your jaw to slightly above your ear. This means that as your hair grows, the softer lines translate to no harsh regrowth.
The longevity of your balayage will depend on several factors, including the type of balayage, how close to the root your Stylist begins, your hair type, choice of colour, and any longer term ambitions to change your look or seek a more saturated and lighter end result. For a softer balayage, here’s how.
When will I know if I need another balayage?
In most instances, aim for best case scenario three months and in absolutely extreme cases, six months. However for greater accuracy, you will know if you need another balayage when you experience one or more of the following:
- Brassiness: Over time, if you’ve had your hair bleached the tone can turn warn, yellow or orangey. Purple shampoo can alleviate some of the symptoms of this, however in the coming weeks you this is likely a sign that you will require salon intervention.
- Contrast: As your hair grows, so does your balayage. You will experience the contrast from dark to light become less blended and less ‘on point’. Whilst balayage is designed to grow out much more gracefully than highlights, you may eventually find that the lighter sections are too far down your hair, making your colour look unbalanced.
- Dullness: When you leave the salon, your hair will have an intangible quality (a shimmer or shine). Whilst we expect that to last for a while, over the coming months most colours will begin to lose their edge.
- Change: In some cases, you may just want to switch it up whether you have grown tired of the same hair colour, want to shift your tone or want a completely different look!
Can I just let me balayage grow out?
Yes and no. One of the biggest benefits of balayage is that it grows out naturally without harsh root regrowth lines. Whilst it will do this, eventually it will begin to look less blended and that isn’t the worst thing to do if you have no intention of colour your hair for the foreseeable. If anything, it’s actually encouraged. If you decide you no longer want to maintain your balayage:
- You can allow it to grow out naturally without needing to colour.
- Keep your hair looking fresh with toners and glossing treatments to maintain shine. Toners aren’t necessary if you are balayaging without bleach, however this isn’t for everyone.
- You can switch to highlights, one colour all over or even a balayage that boasts more dimension. If you are considering a switch, ask your Stylist.
- Hair grows on average 0.5 inches every month. This is a consideration for any haircut or hair colour.
How many times a year will I need a balayage?
The average across most salons when seeing clients is anything between two to four times every 12 months. That averages between every three to six months which is by some distance the most economical colour service making it much lower maintenance than any alternative option. That being said the frequency will depend on your personal preferences and hair goals:
- If you like a fresh, bright look year-round: You might choose to get a full balayage every three months, maximum twice annually but with toner appointments in-between.
- If you prefer a natural, lived-in look – You may only need balayage twice a year, with minimal upkeep between appointments.
- If you go for lighter balayage: You may need toning treatments every 6–8 weeks to prevent brassiness and keep your colour looking fresh.
- If your hair grows quickly: You might want more frequent refreshes to keep the placement of your balayage balanced with your natural hair growth.
Your stylist can recommend a maintenance plan based on your hair type, lifestyle, and how you like your colour to look.
Conclusion
Balayage is a popular choice for anyone seeking a sun-kissed look that doesn’t necessitate lots of upkeep, nor the need to revisit your salon anytime soon. A good balayage can last anywhere from three to six months and with a Stylist that understands your goals and just as importantly can offer additional value by working with you to better understand your lifestyle and budget, they can help you to get the most from your balayage appointment. If you are looking for a change and you have curly hair, don’t worry. Balayage can work on curly hair too!
