Bleach baths in Abingdon
A bleach bath is a method typically used by a Stylist in-salon to remove colour build up or gentle lighten your hair by one of two levels. Unlike scalp bleaching (bleaching applied to every strange of hair), a bleach bath is mixed with shampoo and a lower volume of peroxide, making it a far gentler and weaker formula with a different intention in mind. In our daily blog, we’ll explore what a bleach bath is, when you might need one, whether they are effective, and what alternatives exist.
Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Bleach Bath FAQ's
What is a bleach bath?
A bleach bath is an in-salon service designed to tackle colour build up or to support lightening a base colour by one to two levels by utilising bleach mixed with shampoo and a lower developer. Think of developers as the ‘thing’ which makes colour or bleach ‘work’. Developers come in different strengths from strong to weak and each performs a different function. The weakest developer is typically used in this process to slowly remove colour build up or pigment with a view to a colour change. The mixture is applied to damp hair, allowing it to gently lift colour without the harsh effects of direct bleaching. Since it is less intense than traditional bleach applications, it is often used for minor lightening, correcting uneven hair tones, or preparing the hair for another colour treatment. If this doesn’t apply to you but you want to go much lighter, here’s a blog post on how.
When do I need a bleach bath?
The most common use and typical client that may benefit from a bleach bath is someone that has applied lots of hair colour to their hair, particularly in the case of colour applied over colour. When colour is applied over colour repeatedly (and in some cases using different colours), hair becomes more resistant and in-turn more challenging to lighten. In this instance a bleach bath can help to remove excess pigment and create a more even base. For clients looking to transition to a lighter shade without undergoing a full bleaching process may also benefit from a bleach bath given its weaker formula and a scalp bleach (which allows clients to go for a more radical transformation), bleach baths are designed for subtle lightening.
Do bleach baths work?
Bleach baths can prove highly effective however we would strongly encourage you not to try this one at home. The success of your bleach bath depends on your hair type, current colour, and the result you want to achieve. Given that the formula is to be thought of as a ‘weak’ bleach, it requires a careful hand and patience for it to be effective making it ideal for subtle lightening or colour correctional work. It may take multiple applications and strengths to reach the desired level of lift, especially if you are trying to remove stubborn darker colours (and just as importantly knowing what and when to use it).
What are the alternatives to bleach baths?
The alternatives to bleach baths are arguably far less ideal. Colour removers can be purchased away from a salon however the effectiveness whilst ‘good’ can leave hair in a far less desirable condition. stronger shampoo’s such as clarifying shampoo’s can help gradually fade unwanted colour over time, however there is no exact science to this and this can take patience over a longer stretch of time. In some cases, highlighting appointments over a number of months can achieve the impact of removing colour build up, however this can prove more costly in the long run and the result can be undesirable for a number of months until you can achieve your ideal colour. Here’s what you can do if you have tried it at home and your hair has turned orange. In a controlled environment, whilst the term ‘bleach bath’ can sound scary, with the right stylist, the correct formula and the right conditions, it’s typically the most favourable option.
Conclusion
A bleach bath is a gentler way to lighten hair, correct colour, or remove build-up and is a salons ‘go to’ service. While it can be effective, it isn’t something that any nor every stylist can do and therefore it’s important to recognise that some Stylists will be more effective than others with emphasis placed upon balancing the end result, condition of your hair, desired colour and budget as paramount. An experienced and conscientious Stylist will be well versed in balancing each factor and we would encourage you to speak to use before booking this service as not all clients would necessarily benefit and outcomes can differ from client-to-client.
