Are regularly using hair straighteners a good option?

Most people use straighteners (also know as a flat iron). This can be achieved at home and doesn’t require a salon or stylist intervention. Straighteners work by pressing the hair between two heated plates, which break down hydrogen bonds in the hair, temporarily flattening it. Pros:

Quick: Most people own a pair of straighteners. So beyond your time, it’s relatively straightforward to achieve.
Straight hair: With little to no knowledge you can achieve some fairly basic styles. If you’re unsure, YouTube offers lots of at-home tutorials to assist. What’s more, it’s fairly easy to pick up.

Cons:

Heat damage: If your intention is to straighten as a one-off, it’s fine. However frequent or repeated (or using too high a temperature) can often lead to heat damage, dry hair, split ends, and breakage.
Time-consuming: Little to fine hair is quick and easy. However it you have thick and/or lots of hair it can take a significant portion of time. Most people don’t have the availability each morning to do so.
Temporary results: Whilst it looks great, the benefits are shorter term. By the following day or next hair wash your hair will return to its previous form.

What about blow drying for a straighter look?

A lesser known option which requires some practice is blow-drying your hair straight. By using a round brush and a hair dryer, both work in tandem to create straight hair, body, curls or more!. While less damaging than flat ironing, blow-drying still involves heat and requires some practice, so it’s essential to use a heat protector.

Pros:

Damaging: Blow-drying is generally less damaging than flat ironing because it distributes heat more evenly.

Temporary: Like flat ironing, blow-drying gives temporary results.
