How can I make my hair straight? FAQ's
Are regularly using hair straighteners a good option?
Most people use straighteners (also know as a flat iron). This can be achieved at home and doesn’t require a salon or stylist intervention. Straighteners work by pressing the hair between two heated plates, which break down hydrogen bonds in the hair, temporarily flattening it. While it’s a quick and effective solution, there are points to consider short and longer term. For more pros and cons you can find more information here.
- Quick: Most people own a pair of straighteners. So beyond your time, it’s relatively straightforward to achieve.
- Straight hair: With little to no knowledge you can achieve some fairly basic styles. If you’re unsure, YouTube offers lots of at-home tutorials to assist. What’s more, it’s fairly easy to pick up.
- Heat damage: If your intention is to straighten as a one-off, it’s fine. However frequent or repeated (or using too high a temperature) can often lead to heat damage, dry hair, split ends, and breakage.
- Time-consuming: Little to fine hair is quick and easy. However it you have thick and/or lots of hair it can take a significant portion of time. Most people don’t have the availability each morning to do so.
- Temporary results: Whilst it looks great, the benefits are shorter term. By the following day or next hair wash your hair will return to its previous form.
What about blow drying for a straighter look?
A lesser known option which requires some practice is blow-drying your hair straight. By using a round brush and a hair dryer, both work in tandem to create straight hair, body, curls or more!. While less damaging than flat ironing, blow-drying still involves heat and requires some practice, so it’s essential to use a heat protector.
- Damaging: Blow-drying is generally less damaging than flat ironing because it distributes heat more evenly.
- Finish: Blow-drying can give you straight hair with added volume, avoiding the super-flat look that flat ironing can sometimes create.
- Affordable: Most people own a blow dry so the only emphasis is practice!
- Takes practice: In theory it’s easy, but most clients won’t be able to do it first time. Our Stylists show you ‘how’, though if you are still unsure, YouTube is a great ally.
- Still causes damage: It’s not something you will want to do all day, every day. Though it will be somewhat better for your hair.
- Temporary: Like flat ironing, blow-drying gives temporary results.
What options do salons offer?
If you are looking for something more long-lasting and less damaging than daily heat styling, in-salon treatments could be a good option. Salon options do vary however the one consistent theme is the typical length of result is usually around the three month mark. You have likely heard of keratin treatments or a Brazilian Blow Dry. There are upside and downsides to these types of treatment.
One popular treatment we offer at Wisteria Avenue is the 72 Hair Smoothing Treatment, which provides similar results to a Brazilian Blow Dry without the harmful effects of harsh chemicals. The 72 Hair Smoothing Treatment is a hair smoothing option for a straighter look that doesn’t allow for the same exposure to harsh chemicals. It reduces frizz, enhances shine, and makes your hair much easier to manage, all while keeping your hair healthy.
- Impact: In effect the need to dry, straighten, tackle frizz and unruliness is removed medium term.
- Reduced frizz: If you struggle to frizz, this reduces any unruliness.
- Chemical-free: Unlike some straightening treatments, the 72 Hair Smoothing Treatment doesn’t contain harsh chemicals like formaldehyde, which is commonly found in other similar treatments.
- Quick and easy styling: After the treatment, you can let your hair air-dry or blow-dry it in a fraction of the time, with much less effort.
- Cost: While effective, smoothing treatments are more expensive than DIY methods. However, the long-lasting results can make the investment worthwhile.
- Temporary: The treatment is not permanent and will need to be repeated every few months to maintain the results.
Conclusion - What's the best option for you?
If you have exhausted most options at home or just want to make managing your hair much easier, the solution is likely to be in-salon.
Before making any commitment it’s worth considering your lifestyle, budget, level of commitment and how invested you are in managing your hair. If you’re looking for a more long-lasting solution that’s less damaging, a treatment like the 72 Hair Smoothing Treatment offers a great alternative to chemical straightening or Brazilian Blow Drys.
