Men’s Long Haircuts in Abingdon

Long men’s haircuts cover everything from a long flow style to a layered shoulder-length cut, a man bun, or longer hair paired with a clippered undercut. They take time to grow in, more attention to maintain, and a different cutting approach than a short style — but for the right person and the right hair, the look more than earns it.

At Wisteria Avenue, our stylists work with longer men’s hair through every phase — from the awkward growing-out months through to maintaining a finished long style. Call or WhatsApp us on 01235 534705 if you have a question or want help booking.

Some of the long styles we work with:

Growing your hair out

The growing-out phase is the part most gents underestimate. Between a short style and a finished long style there’s usually a stretch of several months where the hair feels neither short enough nor long enough to sit well — and the temptation is to cut it back short. The fix is small, regular trims that keep the ends tidy and the shape evolving without losing length. We can plan the journey with you, including which length-keeping shapes work well as in-between stages.

Layering for length

Longer hair often needs layering to sit properly. Without layers, length can fall heavy and shapeless; well-placed layers add movement, frame the face, and let the hair fall in the direction you actually want it to. The cut itself is more time-consuming than a short style because every layer counts — but the result is a cut that works with your hair instead of against it.

Long curly or wavy men’s hair

Long hair on curly or wavy textures has its own considerations — the cut needs to account for how the curl pattern behaves at length, and dry cutting is often more accurate than cutting wet for curls. Our curly hair specialists adapt cutting techniques specifically for longer curly cuts. See our curly hair page for more on how we approach curly cutting.

Maintenance, trims, and booking

Long men’s hair tends to need a trim every six to eight weeks to keep the shape and stop split ends working up the hair. That’s less frequent than a fade or short scissor cut, but the trims matter more — left too long, split ends compromise the whole length, and you can end up needing to cut more off than you’d like. A long haircut at Wisteria Avenue includes a consultation, wash, cut and finish, with time built in for the styling questions long hair tends to need. For current pricing, see our price list.

Your Questions, Answered

Frequently asked.

How long does it take to grow men's hair out from short to long?+

Hair grows on average around 1.25cm (half an inch) per month, so going from a short clipper cut to shoulder length usually takes around two years, give or take. The exact timeline depends on your hair's natural growth rate, how healthy the ends stay, and how much trimming is needed along the way. It's a journey rather than a deadline.

Should I get regular trims while growing my hair out?+

Yes — regular trims during a grow-out phase keep the hair healthy and stop split ends working up the lengths. Trims don't affect growth speed (hair grows from the root, not the ends), but they keep the shape evolving and stop damage from costing you length later. Every six to eight weeks is a typical interval.

Can I have an undercut and grow the top out at the same time?+

Yes — this is a common combination, and often makes the growing-out phase feel more manageable. The undercut keeps the back and sides sharp and clean while the top length comes through. You'll need to refresh the undercut more often than the top — typically every two to four weeks for the sides, with the top left alone or trimmed lightly only when needed.

What products do you recommend for longer men's hair?+

It depends on your hair type and the look you're going for. Generally, longer hair benefits from a good conditioner and often a leave-in treatment to keep the lengths healthy. Styling products vary widely — sea salt spray for texture, a light cream for natural waves, a stronger hold product for slick-back styles. We stock JOICO products in salon, and your stylist can recommend specifics for your hair after the cut.

Do you cut long hair wet or dry?+

Both, depending on the hair. Wet cutting gives precision for straight or fine hair where you need accurate length matching. Dry cutting is often better for curly, wavy or textured hair, because you're cutting the hair the way it actually falls. Your stylist will decide based on your hair type and the style you're after — and you're welcome to ask about their approach in the consultation.
