Different types of layered haircuts in Abingdon
Layered haircuts are the choice of many and layers are by some distance the most popular choice of haircut irrespective of length, type of haircut or style, layers always come out on top! Regardless of the above, layers help hair become more manageable, can add movement and make styling much easier. That being said, not all layered haircuts are the same and understanding the different types of layers can seem overwhelming not to mention the benefits of each time, whether they might suit you and indeed what they look like! In our daily blog we work through these options, consider what you might need to know and how different layering techniques can help you.
If you are considering something different, our ladies haircuts service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Layered Haircut FAQ's
What are layers?
Layers are a popular choice of haircut and represent a broader term for a technique of cutting hair at different lengths to create movement, texture, volume and shape. Conversely, many clients prefer one single length for a one-length finish. Layers on the other hand help to reduce weight, whilst presenting the illusion of increased volume, movement and the ability to style. Layers can really vary from longer, subtle and invisible layers which present discreetly to short and choppy layers which are more commonplace in wolf haircuts (a cross between a shag and a mullet). In the case of the latter, short and choppy layers make for an edgier style whilst longer layers allow for a more elegant finish and natural look.
Who would want a layered haircut?
Layers are fairly versatile and they can be tweaked to suit varying hair types, lengths and styling preferences. If you find that your hair is thick and ‘bulky’, layers can help to remove excess weight whilst allowing for your hair to move. Additionally fine hair can get the most out of layering to create the illusion of more volume, body and increased movement.
There are also advantages to introducing layers if you are looking to soften a jawline or even compliment your face shape. For example face-framing layers are for can soften features such as cheekbones and eyes, while longer layers can elongate the appearance of the face.
What are the different layering options?
Layering can feel overwhelming and the number of options won’t add to the ease of understanding! Layers can achieve different things and are largely dependent upon personal taste, your natural hair type, what your hair struggles with/lacks and what you might benefit from.
Long Layers: The most common layering choice is long layers, where subtle, blended layers are cut throughout the length of the hair. If you want a natural look with more movement and definition without sacrificing on the length, long layers are a great choice and this is ideal for natural low-maintenance hair.
Short layers: These offer a more dramatic effect with more variation of lengths. Shorter layers work particularly well when used to create volume at the crown and a more textured, choppy appearance. Examples of haircuts where shorter layers are effective include pixie cuts where emphasis on styling is necessary.
Face-framing layers: The primary advantage of face-framing layers being that they ‘frame’ the face and help key facial features whether that be elongating the face, softening a jawline or similar.
Feathered layers: Feathered layers are helpful if you desire a voluminous look with a ‘nod’ to the past.
Blunt layers: Blunt layers are generally more effective with straight hair as they create a polished and clean overall look. Blunt layers are achieved by keeping the ends of the layers more defined as opposed to blended.
Are longer and shorter layers much different?
Longer and shorter layers could be rephrased as ‘do you value subtlety or something more noticeable?’. Longer layers are generally considered to be much more effortless, easy to manage and low-maintenance. They too are great for added movement and shape! On the other hand shorter layers typically favour contrast and the ability to introduce a more noticeable style with added texture.
Conclusion
Layered haircuts offer plenty of options and with those options many possibilities. Whether your motivation is subtlety, volume, a noticeable style or to enhance facial features, there is something for most hair types, textures and what you hope to achieve.
