T-Section in Abingdon
A t-section is a great option if you’re new to colouring your hair or you just want something different. Many salons won’t often talk about a the benefits of a t-section and what it could do for you for two main reasons. Firstly what a t-section is and what it can do is often misunderstood and secondly when we think of going lighter, most people think ‘full head highlights’.
If you’re thinking about hair colour yet aren’t sure what the best course of action is, we have pieced together some helpful FAQ’s on t-sections. So what exactly is it, and is it worth it? In this blog, we’ll explore everything you need to know about a t-section, including its benefits, longevity, and whether it’s the right choice for you. If you want to learn more about highlights and what they can do for you, we have a highlights service page.
Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
T-Section FAQ's
What is a t-section?
A t-section in plain English is fewer highlights than a half head and a full head of highlights. At this point you might be thinking, ‘but what are highlights!?’. The best analogy is a full head of highlights offers lighter pieces of hair blending alongside your natural hair from the nape (the last hair at the bottom of your neck) all the way to your forehead and everywhere else in between). A half head of foils will look very similar, however if you wear your hair in a ponytail, you will see that much of your hair ‘underneath’ has been left out of foil. A t-section is less than a half head and could be described as ‘everything on top’ leaving the underneath more natural. It’s also worth citing what hairdressing foils are. These are designed to help your hair colour or bleach ‘process’ whilst aiding your Stylists’ ability to work through your hair strategically.
The highlights are applied in a ‘T’ shape across the parting and down the sides of the head, framing your face. It’s a partial highlight service that is ideal for those looking to brighten up their look without going for a full head of highlights.
It’s worth noting that this may not necessarily make sense, the next two questions which outline ‘why’ and ‘what’ will provide more context and rationale as to what it can deliver and how it can benefit clients. For more information what is a t-section, this can help.
Why do people get a t-section?
A t-section is often misunderstood, but it can offer excellent benefits and appeal in ways that other methods of highlight cannot. Here’s why many women choose this option:
Low Maintenance: The subject of frequency of appointment may offer contradictory advice (usually suggesting somewhere between 4-8 weeks in your Google searches), however there are factors which can greatly influence this timescale. it’s worth noting that many Stylists will tell you not to apply a t-section, instead opting for a full head highlights. In principle 4-8 weeks is true, however if applied with appropriate foil placement (and colour), it can last for a long time (incidentally longer and a full head of foils which requires upkeep on average every 2-3 months). For this reason a t-section is a lot easier to maintain than any other form of highlights. It’s a great option for anyone who wants to keep their hair colour fresh without yet break up a block/flat colour with something extra that isn’t too overpowering.
Cost-effective: The actual service itself doesn’t offering that significant of a saving (it’s usually about £20 cheaper than a full head of highlights), the real saving is in the frequency of appointment (assuming you work with your Stylist on complimentary colour choices and what you hope to achieve). In driving down the frequency of appointment, that’s the true saving.
Subtlety: Again, most t-sections aren’t that subtle. They are usually applied to ‘top up’ full head or half head foils every 6 weeks. However, is you work with your Stylist we find that most clients return every 4-6 months on average when they work with us to find a colour and foil placements that grows out more naturally.
Fine Hair: A t-section is great for fine hair, in-fact it’s one of the best colours for fine hair! If you find that your hair lacks an ‘X’ factor, it’s flat or just doesn’t feel like it has enough volume, breaking it up with a t-section can work really well to present the illusion of more volume.
What does a t-section look like?
It depends what you hope to achieve. Historically clients visited a salon for a t-section every six weeks without fail, yet more commonly clients book a t-section for one of two reasons; some want highlights that will tie them over for an event such as a wedding, Birthday, Christmas etc. with their next full head highlights appointment booked a month later. The second type of client which is becoming increasingly popular is someone that just wants to break up their natural colour with a lighter or darker shade that isn’t overpowering, offers subtlety and a healthier blend which doesn’t insist upon regular visits to the salon.
So a t-section can look like one of two things; it can offer a subtle ‘pieces’ (lighter or darker) to break up your natural colour with your natural colour being the predominant colour. Alternatively it can offer you a lighter colour ‘on top’, the latter usually to top up existing highlight or lowlight colour.
As an alternative suggestion, if you require something that is low maintenance, the money piece is another option. The is the application of roughly six foils that aims to frame the face with lighter pieces.
How long does a t-section last?
Worst case scenario, 8 weeks. Best case scenario… Months. This is largely dependent upon what your aim is and how closely you work with your Stylist to achieve those benefits. If you prefer to opt for a colour that breaks up your natural hair colour, it will last longer. If it’s a top up more frequents, it won’t last for quite as long.
Is it worth getting a t-section?
Whether a t-section is worth it for you depends on your lifestyle and anticipated look. Here are some reasons why it might be worth trying:
You’re new to highlights: If you’ve never had highlights before, a t-section is a great way to ease into colouring your hair. It’s less commitment than a full head, but still gives you that beautiful, lifted look without turning heads for the wrong reasons.
You’re on a budget: T-sections are generally more affordable than full or half-head highlights, particularly given their average frequency of appointment. It’s subtle without tying you into regular appointments.
You want a natural look: A t-section provides a softer, more natural finish. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a light, sun-kissed effect rather than a bold, all-over blonde.
Conclusion
If you’re starting out in your hair colour journey yet remain apprehensive, a t-section is a fantastic option for anyone looking for a subtle, cost-effective way to adopt a hair colour. It also offers scope in the future to ‘do more’ without requiring significant cost to transition. Effectively a t-section doesn’t tie you into any colour without the promise of a straightforward appointment. Balayage, full head highlights, tint or just letting it grow out gracefully are all still options on the table. It provides the brightness and dimension of highlights without the commitment or cost and frequency of touch up required by a full head highlights.
