Fix damaged hair in Abingdon
If you’re dealing with dry, brittle, or damaged hair, it can feel like the end of the world. Your hair is really important and is part of your makeup and identity. The cause of hair issues doesn’t always stem from the same reason; Many women in Oxfordshire suffer from hair problems caused by anything and everything from environmental factors, over-bleaching, heat exposure, colour build-up over the years, or even hormonal changes. Whether you’ve experienced a colour gone wrong or years of styling have taken their toll, before getting in the car and driving to Tesco to grab your hair mask and box colour, not every ‘treatment’ is a fix and not every ‘protective’ shampoo is a solution. The good news is that damaged or dry hair can be treated though the method for treatment should consider first the cause and what your hair needs and in some cases, a salon visit might be your best option.
In our latest blog, we’ll explore some of the top causes of hair damage, some safe options for resolving your damaged hair and how with some help you can work towards bringing your hair back to life. Whether your issue is dryness, breakage, or both, there are solutions tailored to your specific needs.
Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Fixing Damaged Hair FAQ's
Why is the cause of damaged hair important?
Treatments can feel overwhelming. To simplify the market and the sheer volume of options at your disposal, if a hair expert sought to resolve a hair-related problem they would first establish the problem, rationalise it and work backward to understand what your hair needs and its solution. Hair typically deteriorates as a consequence of at least one of the following;
- Environmental Factors: Sun exposure, pollution and changes in humidity can all contribute to dry and damaged hair.
- Over-Processing: Repeated colouring, bleaching, and heat styling without adequate protection will strip your hair of its natural oils and leave it dry and prone to breakage.
- Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations due to pregnancy, menopause, or medical conditions can cause hair to become drier, more brittle, or to thin.
- Product Build-Up: Years of using heavy products, especially those containing harsh chemicals can lead to build-up on the scalp and hair, preventing moisture from penetrating the hair shaft.
Dry Hair versus damaged hair. What's the difference?
While dry and damaged hair often go hand in hand, they are not the same thing. Dry hair typically lacks moisture and appears frizzy, dull, and unmanageable. This could be due to genetics, your hair type, or environmental factors. Damaged hair, on the other hand, has been structurally compromised—usually from excessive heat, chemical treatments, or aggressive styling techniques. Damaged hair tends to break easily, feel rough to the touch, and may show signs of split ends.
Understanding the difference is crucial because the treatment you need will depend on the nature of your hair’s condition. If that isn’t helpful and you need a DIY fix for frizzy hair, this might help.
Treatment options for dry and damaged hair
If your hair is severely damaged, it’s unlikely that it’s an immediate fix in the form of a hair mask at home to fully restore your hair (unless you are willing to invest significant sums to try). Stylists will tend to support the use of hair masks for shorter-term gain with emphasis on ‘something else’ to give a much more intense and immediate benefit that is much more aggressive. We have outlined one of these below which is as of writing arguably the most complete treatment that offers excellent results in the form of the JOICO K-PAK Hair Repair System. The typical client on the extreme end of the spectrum is someone that has coloured or bleached their hair and it’s been left devoid of moisture, visibly dry and needs a desperate injection of moisture. This is by no means the only client profile; however if it’s dry or damaged hair that you struggle with, this is a good starting point and the first port of call for any client struggling.
JOICO K-PAK Hair Repair
The K-PAK Hair Repair System works by replenishing lost proteins and restoring moisture balance, leaving your hair stronger, healthier, and more resilient. This is particularly beneficial for those whose hair struggles to hold colour or has become dry and fragile due to bleaching. In many other cases the treatment can also apply to issues with curly hair that craves moisture, post-pregnancy hair or hair which just needs a boost. The treatment penetrates deep into the hair shaft, targeting the core of the damage and rebuilding the hair from the inside out.
Pros of the K-PAK Treatment:
- Repairs and strengthens the hair from the inside.
- Long-lasting results.
- Improves the hair’s ability to retain moisture and hold colour.
Cons:
- Requires regular salon visits for maintenance.
- Can be more costly than at-home treatments.
Keratin Treatments
For those whose hair is not necessarily damaged but dry and suffering from unruliness due to its natural texture, keratin treatments can work wonders. These treatments smooth and/or reduce the volume of frizz in the hair by infusing it with keratin, a protein that your hair is naturally made of. Keratin treatments are particularly effective for frizzy or coarse hair and can leave your hair feeling soft, manageable, and smooth for extended periods. One example that we use is pHrizzy-o-therapy and a Smoothing Cream.
Modern keratin treatments have come a long way from the harsh, chemical-heavy options of the past. Now, many treatments use gentler formulas that are free from harmful chemicals like formaldehyde, making them a safer and more sustainable choice for long-term use.
Pros of Keratin Treatments:
- Adds moisture and smooths frizz.
- Improves manageability and makes styling easier.
- Long-lasting (usually three to six months).
Cons:
- Can be expensive, especially if done frequently.
- Not suitable for severely damaged hair.
At-Home Treatments
If your hair damage is not severe, or if you’re simply dealing with dryness, there are several at-home treatments you can try. While they may not offer the intensive repair that in-salon treatments provide, they can still help maintain moisture and improve hair texture between salon visits.
Look for deep conditioning masks that contain ingredients like keratin, argan oil, or shea butter. These will help to nourish and hydrate your hair, making it softer and easier to manage. However, be aware that at-home treatments are typically a temporary fix and will not address more severe damage.
Over-the-Counter Products:
- Hydrating Masks: These can provide temporary moisture and shine but may not penetrate deep enough to repair structural damage.
- Oils: Argan oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oil can help to lock in moisture, though they don’t repair damage.
- Leave-in Conditioners: These provide ongoing hydration and protection against environmental stressors.
Pros of At-Home Treatments:
- Cost-effective.
- Convenient and easy to apply.
- Can maintain moisture levels and improve hair texture.
Cons:
- Short-term results.
- May not fully resolve deeper damage or structural issues.
Longer-term solutions for healthier hair
Consistency is really supportive. It may sound less appealing than progressive treatments, however regular haircuts, investing in hair products which align with your hair type, lifestyle and needs is really important. If you are able to consider what you struggle with, it is greatly supportive of benefitting your hair.
Here are some tips for keeping your hair in top condition:
- Heat Styling: It’s surprisingly common how many people use heat on wet hair, unprotected hair or hair daily. Hair is fine to be styled ever so often, however regular exposure can leave hair with split ends, dry and lacking energy.
- Haircuts: Hair grows roughly half an inch every four weeks. Every three months that’s 1.5 inches. As a worst case scenario addressing half an inch and leaving one is a worst case scenario to achieving healthy hair.
- Treating Hair: Consider a bi-monthly treatment in-salon treatment. They’re broadly quite cost-effective and deliver really good results. For example we offer one for £30 which taking into account the results are excellent value for money.
Conclusion
Fixing dry or damaged hair is possible, but it requires a sensitive approach that is tailored depending on the cause and extent of the damage. Whether it’s a professional treatment or something at home, investing in the health of your hair is key to healthy hair as is maintaining your cuts and product usage.
