Is It Time to Visit the Hair Salon More Often?
It’s one of the most common questions we’re asked at Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon: how often should I actually be booking in? There isn’t a single answer that fits everyone — it depends on your hair, your cut and whether you have colour — but there are some clear, honest guidelines worth knowing. Here’s how to think about it.
The general rule of thumb
For most people, a visit every six to twelve weeks keeps hair looking its best, whether that’s a cut, a colour or a treatment. The wide range is deliberate: where you sit within it depends entirely on what you have done and what your hair is like. The point of regular appointments isn’t simply to keep things tidy — it’s that they let your stylist stay on top of your hair, catching small issues before they become bigger ones.
How often for a haircut
If you’re growing your hair, you might assume skipping cuts helps. In practice, the opposite is often true. Regular trims keep the ends in good condition and stop splits travelling further up the hair, which actually supports healthy growth. Shorter, more structured styles — a bob, a pixie, anything where the shape is doing the work — need more frequent visits to hold their line, often around every six to eight weeks. Longer, less structured styles can usually go longer between cuts.
How often for colour
Colour is where timing matters most, and it varies hugely depending on the service. An all-over tint shows regrowth at the roots fairly quickly, so it tends to need refreshing more often. Techniques like balayage are designed to grow out softly, which means they can go considerably longer between appointments — sometimes several months. If keeping the upkeep down is a priority for you, our post on the most maintainable hair colour services is worth a read.
The honest point about cost
Leaving hair too long between appointments can sometimes cost you more, not less. The clearest example is colour: if regrowth is dealt with at a regular appointment, it’s a straightforward service. Left for a long stretch, that same regrowth can need significantly more work to blend — and in some cases what would have been a routine root application becomes a colour correction, which is a longer, more involved and more expensive job. Staying on a sensible rhythm isn’t an upsell; over the medium term it genuinely tends to be the cheaper path. Our post on managing regrowth goes into the options in more detail.
It’s not about visiting more — it’s about visiting at the right time
The aim here isn’t to get you booking constantly. It’s to find the rhythm that suits your hair so it always looks its best and you’re never paying to undo a problem that could have been avoided. The easiest way to work that out is to ask — your stylist can tell you exactly how often your particular cut or colour needs attention.
