Blonde highlights — in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

Blonde is the colour most people picture when they think of highlights — brightness woven through the hair that lifts your whole look, catches the light, and can take years off or completely change how a style reads. But “blonde” isn’t one thing, and it isn’t equally achievable for everyone. Done properly, blonde highlights are one of the most transformative colour services we offer — and also one where an honest consultation matters most, because the route to blonde depends entirely on where your hair is starting from.

Call or WhatsApp us on 01235 534705 if you’d like to talk through whether blonde is right for you.

What “blonde” can mean for you.

Blonde highlights run across a wide range, and the right amount depends on how much change you want and how much upkeep suits your life. At the subtle end, as few as ten foils placed through the hair give a soft lift — brightness around the face, a sun-touched finish, nothing dramatic. From there it scales up: a T-section for lift through the parting and crown, a half head for visible brightness with your natural colour kept underneath, or a full head for a properly blonde, transformed look. There’s no single “correct” amount — it’s about matching the result to the face-framing and maintenance you actually want, which is what we work out together at the consultation.

Can everyone go blonde? The honest answer.

Not always in one appointment — and this is the part worth understanding before you book. If your hair is naturally dark, or has darker colour built up from previous dyeing, going properly blonde in a single sitting usually isn’t safe or realistic. Lifting dark hair all the way to a clean blonde in one go risks damage, and often produces brassy, uneven results rather than the tone you wanted. The right approach in those cases is a staged one: lightening gradually over more than one visit, letting the hair recover between appointments, and building towards your target blonde in a way that keeps the hair healthy. It takes longer, but the result is a blonde that looks good and hair that’s still in good condition — rather than a one-day transformation that costs you the health of your hair.

For some clients this is a genuine journey over several appointments; for others already fairly light, it’s much quicker. There’s no way to know exactly which until a stylist has seen and felt your hair in person and understood its history — which is exactly what the consultation is for. We’d always rather be honest with you at the start about what going blonde really involves than promise a result we can’t safely deliver in one go.

Why we rarely use just one blonde.

The most natural, expensive-looking blonde is almost never a single shade. Flat, one-tone blonde tends to look artificial and can wash you out. What we usually do instead is work with more than one colour at once: a blonde for the brightness, a darker shade close to your natural base for depth, and often a third tone that sits between the two to bridge them. That combination is what gives blonde its dimension — light that looks like it belongs in your hair rather than sitting on top of it, and a grow-out that’s far softer than a single block of blonde. Adding those deeper tones (a form of lowlighting) is also what stops blonde looking “stripy” or over-lightened over repeated appointments.

The exact blend is chosen to suit your natural base, your skin tone and your eye colour, so no two blondes we do are quite the same. It’s one of the reasons the consultation matters — the formula is personal.

Keeping blonde looking its best.

Blonde asks a little more of you at home than darker colours, mostly around tone. As blonde grows out and washes, it can pick up warmer, brassier tones — so we’ll usually recommend a toning or purple shampoo to keep it looking clean and cool between appointments, and talk you through how often to use it. How frequently you come back for a refresh depends on how much contrast there is between your blonde and your natural base: the lighter you’ve gone relative to your natural colour, the more visible the regrowth, and the more often you’ll want a top-up. We’ll be straight with you about that at the consultation, because it’s part of choosing the right level of blonde for your life, not just for the day.

Every appointment starts with a consultation.

Free, no-obligation, and it includes the skin test we’re required to carry out before any colour service. We use JOICO for our colour and treatment work. The consultation is where we look at your hair in person, understand its history and condition, and work out an honest route to the blonde you want — whether that’s achievable in one appointment or better done in stages. On cost: blonde highlights vary a great deal with your starting colour, hair length and density, and how much work is involved, so we don’t quote a flat price — your consultation gives you a firm figure before you book, and the full price list is on a separate page. If you’re expecting or nursing, our guidance on hair colour while pregnant or breastfeeding is worth a read first.

Booking your appointment.

If you’re new to us, book a consultation first — it’s free, includes the required skin test, and lets us give you an honest plan for going blonde before you commit. Bring photos of the blonde you’re hoping for; they help us understand the exact tone you’re after and tell you honestly how many appointments it’s likely to take. It’s also worth reading our main highlights page for how the different coverage levels work, and our AirTouch highlights page if you want the softest possible blend.

Online booking is at wisteriaavenue.co.uk/bookings, or call us Tuesday to Saturday on 01235 534705. WhatsApp the same number if it’s easier.
