Curly Hair Styling FAQ's

Getting started: Cleanse and Condition

Off the bat, it’s worth mentioning that we use Only Curls, a curly hair specialist range of hair products. Their range are stocked in our salon and are reasonably priced whilst offering excellent recents, although it’s important to mention you can follow similar steps with other colour hair products, though in our experience and to replicate our in-salon results, Only Curls is a good starting point.

To start, the foundation of any curly hair routine starts with a good cleanse and condition. Curls require moisture to stay defined, and without it, they can quickly become dry, frizzy, and difficult to style. The way to think about curls is that moisture struggles to ‘travel’ along curly hair in the way that straight hair doesn’t suffer in the way way and therefore we need to introduce moisture independently. Curly hair tends to be drier than other hair types, so washing every 3-4 days is usually ideal. Over-washing can strip natural oils and lead to dryness, so aim to cleanse as needed and refresh curls without over-doing it.

  1. Only Curls Cleanser: This gentle cleanser will feel more dense to the touch than your more commonly accessible and traditional shampoos. What is important about the Only Curls Cleanser is that it is designed and formulated specifically for curly hair and therefore it behaves differently. Unlike traditional shampoos, which can be fine on straight hair, these can be too harsh and strip your hair of its natural oils when applied to curly hair. Getting the right balance is really important.

  2. Only Curls Conditioner: Following up with a conditioner formulated for curly hair makes up the combined starting point alongside the curl cleaner. The Only Curls Conditioner that we use in-salon is formulated to support hydration making your hair look and feel better not to mention it will allow for an improved starting point. Apply generously from the mid-lengths to the ends, comb through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb, and rinse lightly, leaving a little product remaining for added moisture.

If your hair is notoriously frizzy and you have tried curly hair specific cleansers, conditioners and our tips below, there is an in-salon solution called pHrizzy-o-therapy! Its vegan formula is geared towards reducing frizz whilst you’re still able to retain your curl!

Choosing your styling products

Once your hair is cleansed and conditioned, what your curls look like and what you set out to achieve and how you want your curls to look matters. Different products behave differently and how you apply them with each having their own unique benefit. Here’s a quick introduction on which products to use and how to use them for the best results.

  1. Curl Crème: If you want something that’s adaptable to all of life’s challenges, enhancing curls with a lightweight product like the curl creme is the obvious choice. It can be used by applying a small of the curl creme to damp hair, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends. It doesn’t need to be applied in a set way, just by using your fingers and scrunching can work.

  2. Enhancing Curl Gel: Curl gels aren’t for everyone. They can feel a little static, yet what they do will is present shine and definition in a way that other products can’t. Whilst the curls won’t have the same level of hold as the Mega Hold Curl Gel, they will set the curl unlike anything else. Remember, you only need a small amount to distribute evenly throughout your hair, again scrunching upwards to lift your curls.

  3. Mega Hold Curl Gel: See above! If you want a firmer option than the Enhancing Curl Gel, this is ideal for curls that tend to lose their rhythm throughout the day. If you’re looking for a stronger hold, try the Mega Hold Curl Gel. This gel is ideal for curls that tend to lose shape throughout the day. The Mega Hold Gel is perfect for high-humidity days or if you’re attending an event where you need your curls to stay intact for hours. This can be applied using your fingers or with the help of a wide tooth comb to ensure coverage.

  4. Curl Mousse: This isn’t for anyone but for finer curls it’s great. Apply a small amount to the roots and work it through to the ends for extra volume. The mousse is lightweight but effective in creating a more voluminous look.

What to do for defined curls

When it comes to curly hair, there are some tried and tested methods that work that don’t always need salon intervention to get your desired end result. Here are some examples of things you can try at home:

  1. Scrunching: Scrunching is a tried-and-true method to enhance curl shape. After applying your products, gently scrunch your curls upward. Avoid regular towels, as they can cause frizz.

  2. Diffusing: Curls don’t respond well to heat. Using a diffuser is easy, cheap and effective. This clever attachment slides on the end of your hairdryer, use a medium heat/medium speed setting and hover the diffuser within your curls. This reduces the moisture whilst avoiding the cause of frizz. If you want to reduce frizz in other ways, here’s some ideas. However the use of a diffuser on the medium heat/medium speed setting adds volume and helps curls form more naturally without so much frizz full stop.

  3. Fingers: If you have areas of your hair where curls tend to lose definition, try finger coiling. All you need to do is find your first damp section of hair and twist around your finger! This is great if you have areas of your hair which are stubborn and refuse to curl.

  4. The Hair Flip: Avoid parting your hair. A lot of curly hair doesn’t benefit from a parting so flip your hair over for a fuller look. This lifts the roots creating a fuller look.

Lock in your look

Once your curls are dry, avoid touching or brushing them (it creates unnecessary frizz if you do). If you are looking for more curly hair tips, these can help. However if you want something extra, these steps might help:

  • Separate Curls for Volume: For added volume, carefully separate larger curls with your fingers. Be gentle to avoid disrupting the curl pattern.
  • Use a Lightweight Oil: If your curls tend to get dry despite your curly hair product usage, a few drops of lightweight hair oil can add shine and hydration without weighing them down. We use the only Curls Nourishing Hair Oil although you only need to apply sparingly and try to focus on the ends.
  • Set with a Light Mist of Hairspray: For extra hold, a light hairspray can keep everything in place without making your curls too stiff.

Conclusion

Curly hair can be beautiful and if managed and styled correctly alongside regular haircuts, can be straightforward to tackle. Consider how you view your curls and how you want them to look before choosing your styling product(s) of choice. Try to work with your curls rather than against it; when matched with the right techniques you can add so much to your hair often with little additional time and effort.

We use Only Curls products in-salon. Whether it’s your cleanser, conditioner, mousse, gel, creme or nourishing oil, with the right application and choice of style you can really maximise your curls. If you can work to refine your routine with some consistency these steps will help you get the best from your curls. If you want to learn more about how to care for your curly hair, here’s three things that you need.
