Perms on bleached hair in Abingdon
Perms on highlighted or bleached hair can be very eye-catching. Curls in general look great alongside blondes so the combination of bleach and curly hair can be a great combination. However if you already have highlights or bleached hair and you’ve been considering the option of a perm, you might be wondering whether it’s possible without damaging your hair? Bleached hair can be fragile, and perming involves chemicals that alter the structure of your hair. So, is it doable? Should you do it? And, can we help?
For more information about our perms, visit our perm service page. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
Perms on bleached and highlighted hair FAQ's
Is it possible to perm bleached hair?
Perming bleached hair is possible, and it can be done. Concerns around perming bleached hair arise from the potential to abuse perm lotions on existing dry or damaged hair thus weakening its structure. Nobody wants dry or damaged hair, so working with your Stylist to ensure your hair type and condition is compatible and will add beautiful curls without compromise is really important. The worst case scenario is applying a perm to already dry and damaged hair that requires pre-treating. The best case scenario is hair which is in great condition, feels and looks fantastic and the addition of curls will add something extra to your already beautiful hair.
When bleaching hair, bleach removes the natural pigments from your hair and can weaken its structure, making it more susceptible to damage. Perms break and and reforming the bonds in your hair to create curls or waves. When combined, these chemical processes can be harsh on your hair if not cared for or pre-treated in the event of damaged hair.
Before you perm your hair, whether bleached or not your Stylist should work with you to help determine your suitability for a perm and if deemed unsuited, they will be able to lay out a plan for how to achieve healthy hair pre-perm. If your hair is overly damaged, they may recommend waiting until it has recovered or suggest alternative styling options that are less invasive.
It’s also worth noting that perms are just as popular for men as they are for women! For information on men’s perms, here’s a recent blog post.
Do I need to do anything before I perm my bleached hair?
It depends on the condition of your hair. For damaged or dry hair, your Stylist will recommend a course of treatments to ensure compatibility with a perm ensuring your suitability whilst maximising how your perm will eventually look (healthier hair equals a better looking perm!). There are a number of in-salon options, we take advantage of JOICO’s K-Pak Four Step Treatment which is a game-changed for rejuvenating and strengthening hair. This option isn’t available as a product purchase (given the cost and frequency for which we would recommend usage), but it is a market leader and representative of exceptional value. Treatments such as this help restore moisture and strengthen your hair and are specifically designed for damaged or chemically treated hair.
For hair that hasn’t received been cut, we offer curly haircuts which differ in their approach to a haircut designed for straight hair. Oftentimes, perms won’t take to the ends of your newly permed hair, so a nice curly haircut can really add that extra polish to a great looking set of curls.
Will my Stylist need to do anything different?
Not every head of hair is the same, neither is the type of perm requested, in particular perming bleached hair requires a somewhat different approach. Dependent on the hair texture and condition, it might be agreed that a looser perm (for example a beach wave) might be required which will influence the processing time, the type of perm solution required (your Stylist will likely take advantage of a solution for resistant hair) whilst ensuring throughout the process they continue to consider the integrity of your hair against your desired curl pattern.
The type of curl you want really does influence the process. For example, looser waves (as above) may require a different technique and perming rod size compared to tighter curls. Your stylist’s expertise is crucial here, as they will adjust the timing, product selection, and technique to suit your hair’s unique needs.
Will a perm damage my hair if it's already been bleached?
The key is how a product is used. In the right hands and used appropriately a perm won’t cause you issues beyond needing to care for curls differently that straight hair. That being said, when combined with existing damage and a perm lotion allowed to process for too long, it is inevitable that you will cause damage to your hair.
A skilled stylist will take every precaution to ensure that your hair remains as healthy as possible, maintain a great look and ensure it feels great. Post-perm care is helpful too if you want to care for your perm beyond the initial appointment; Hydration is key when it comes to curly hair with an increasing number of curly hair specific products entering the market. We use Only Curls as our in-salon range of curly products and they are one of a few which may serve to support your new curly hair. If you want to fix damaged hair, read this blog.
Conclusion
Perming bleached hair is very achievable, but it requires an experienced Hair Stylist that is able to recognise when you should perm and when extra TLC is required before you should think about perming already bleached hair. The health of your hair should always be the top priority, so it’s essential to consult with an experienced stylist who can assess its condition and recommend the best approach.
Finally, if you are feeling lost in what could work best for you, leave it to us. Our consultations work through any question you might have, logistics and we too make recommendations based upon your lifestyle and hair type.
