All you need to know about undercuts in Abingdon
Undercuts look great but they aren’t that popular. In some ways they aren’t popular because of the ‘risk’ of looking different and standing out from the crowd. In many ways that makes undercuts all the more appealing as it’s a style which is unlikely to catch on in greater volume so you can with some confidence stand out in the best way possible without the fear that everyone else will copy your new cut!
The undercut is a great way to express your personality and style too, whilst a and the right undercut can still look sophisticated in the workplace as well as socially! If you’re considering an undercut for the first time, there’s a few pointer to consider before taking the plunge. From style options to the pros and cons, our blog will guide you through everything you need to know about undercuts, including tips on how to make the style more manageable.
If you’re looking for a new haircut then our ladies haircut service page could help you.
Undercut FAQ's
What is an undercut?
An undercut involves shaving or cutting the hair very short on one part of the head while leaving the rest of the hair longer. The most common undercut styles involve shaving the sides, back, or a section of the head, creating a contrast with the longer hair on top. This style can be as subtle or bold as you like, depending on how much hair you choose to cut and how you style the remaining hair.
What are my options for an undercut?
The beauty of an undercut is that it can in some ways be applied to most styles in some way and with some creative thinking! These are some options that you may want to consider.
Side Undercut: The side undercut literally means shaving the side of your hair and leaving the other! This is arguably is the secondary introductory undercut above a nape undercut and the most popular before adding different element. So if you want to make a statement this is a good initial option without going too extreme. As a tip, you can part your hair to one side to showcase the shaved area or let your longer hair fall naturally to cover it when you want a more conservative look.
Nape Undercut: The nape undercut is a more subtle version, where the hair at the neck is shaved or cut short. This style is often hidden under longer hair and can be seen when you wear your hair up in a ponytail. It’s a great option for those who want the edge of an undercut but need a more discreet style for work or other formal settings.
Undercut with Design: Think of your undercut as a blank canvas! The canvas is used to create your own design. More commonly people opt for geometric designs or similar. This does require a lot of upkeep, but they do look amazing. This is something that very few, if any clients go for but if you want to further express your creativity in a different way. It’s worth noting that Hair Stylists within a salon will be adept are creating an undercut however if you want a design within the undercut this is a highly specialised skill set. Some barbers may be able to achieve the design (rather than the cut) however the particular skill set is highly individual and not something universally recognised. Treat this as a case-by-case basis. So think salon for haircut/barber for design work.
Disconnected Undercut: The disconnected undercut features a stark contrast between the shaved part and the longer hair, with no gradual fade between the two. This style is particularly bold and works well for those looking to make a big statement.
Undercut Bob: For those who love a classic bob but want to add a modern twist, the undercut bob is an excellent choice. The undercut at the back or sides gives the bob a fresh, edgy look while maintaining its chic, timeless appeal.
Pros of getting an undercut
- They can look amazing!
- They are typically unique from one to the next and if chosen correctly, can be standout for all the right reasons.
- They are versatile so can be applied to most hair types.
- If you want to stay on top of the undercut so long as it doesn’t carry a pattern (most don’t) then shaving it back in is quick, efficient and cost effective. Our salon allows you to book for a maintenance cut. They take 15 minutes to shave the undercut back in.
Cons of getting an undercut
- If your intention is to grow the undercut out, it can require some tactful styling to make it work. If the undercut is visible (like a side undercut) then this may require some patience to grow out.
- If you don’t want to be standout, this isn’t the haircut for you.
- Undercuts do require more frequent visits to the salon and therefore if you aren’t used to monthly visits this may take some getting used to. The higher frequency is just to ‘put back’ the undercut by shaving it with greater regularity.
Is an undercut right for you?
If you’re ready to an increased ongoing maintenance then the positives far outweigh the downsides. The undercut is bold, stylish, edgy and does so many great things to showcase your personality. This can also be tailored to suit subtly or something much more striking. An undercut is a bold and stylish choice that can be tailored to suit your personality and lifestyle.
