How to protect your hair from heat damage.
Straighteners, curling wands, hot brushes and hairdryers are part of most people’s routines, and they can give you a gorgeous finish. But heat is also one of the leading causes of dry, brittle, damaged hair. The good news is that you don’t have to give up your hot tools to keep your hair healthy — you just need to use them more cleverly. Here’s how our Abingdon stylists protect hair from heat damage without sacrificing the style.
What heat damage actually does.
Your hair is protected by an outer layer called the cuticle, made up of tiny overlapping scales like roof tiles. When you apply high heat, especially to dry hair, those scales lift, crack and eventually break away. Underneath, heat also boils away the moisture and weakens the proteins that give hair its strength and elasticity. The result is hair that looks rough and dull, frizzes easily, snaps rather than stretches, and struggles to hold moisture. Heat is one of the most common causes of dry hair we see, and once the damage is done, the only real cure is to cut it off — so prevention is everything.
The signs your hair is heat damaged.
Not sure whether heat is the problem? Look out for split or frayed ends, white nodes along the hair shaft, dryness and rough texture at the ends, frizz and flyaways that won’t calm down, hair that feels gummy or stretchy when wet, and colour that fades or looks dull faster than it should. If several of these sound familiar, it’s time to rethink your heat routine.
Always use a heat protectant.
This is the single most important step, and the one most often skipped. A heat protectant spray or cream forms a barrier over the hair that slows how quickly heat transfers into the strand and helps lock in moisture. Apply it to damp hair before blow drying, and again on dry hair before you reach for straighteners or a wand. Never use hot tools on bare, unprotected hair.
Turn the temperature down.
Hotter is not better. Most people run their tools far higher than they need to. Fine or fragile hair rarely needs more than around 150°C, while thick or coarse hair can go higher but seldom needs to be maxed out. If your styler has a temperature dial, use it, and start low. It also helps to make sure hair is fully dry before you straighten it, because clamping hot irons onto damp hair effectively boils the water inside it. If you’d like to understand what a professional finish involves, our guide to what a blow dry is walks through the process.
Work in sections, and take heat-free days.
Repeatedly passing straighteners over the same piece of hair multiplies the damage, so work in clean, manageable sections and aim for one slow, confident pass rather than five frantic ones. Your hair also doesn’t need styling every day — building in a couple of heat-free days each week gives it a chance to recover, and it’s a great excuse to master an easy air-dried or plaited style. Investing in quality tools helps too, as cheap ones create hot spots that scorch the hair.
Dry your hair the smart way.
How you dry your hair matters as much as how you style it. Resist the urge to rub it vigorously with a towel, as wet hair is at its most fragile and rough drying roughens the cuticle and causes breakage — squeeze gently instead, or use a soft microfibre towel or an old cotton T-shirt. If you’re blow drying, let your hair air dry to around 80% first, then finish with the dryer on a medium heat and keep the nozzle moving rather than blasting one spot. Holding the dryer a little further from the hair and pointing it down the hair shaft smooths the cuticle and cuts frizz, so you need fewer passes with straighteners afterwards.
Keep moisture and strength topped up.
Heat styling depletes moisture, so put it back. A weekly deep-conditioning mask and a regular bond-building or protein treatment keep hair strong and elastic so it copes better with styling. In the salon we can recommend the right treatment for your hair type and assess how much repair it needs.
Consider a smoothing treatment.
If you rely on straighteners mainly to fight frizz or tame unruly hair, a professional smoothing treatment could dramatically cut how much heat styling you need day to day. Our keratin smoothing treatments leave hair easier to manage and quicker to dry — which means less time under hot tools and healthier hair overall.
