Why do we get grey hair?

The Wisteria Avenue Journal

Why does hair turn grey?

Grey hair is one of the most common complaints in-salon and something we will all suffer from at some stage in our lives. For some, it happens much earlier than others and late teens and early twenties and for others in their forties or even later! Turning grey is usually a gradual process that creeps up on us with age. But what are the causes that turn our hair grey?

In this blog, we discuss the science, myths, what you can expect your Stylist to advise you and how you can combat grey hairs when they start coming through.

If you are considering something different, our hairlighting service page or all over colour service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.

Grey Hair FAQ’s

What causes hair to go grey?

Hair turns grey due to the reduced melanin production. Melanin is what gives our hair, skin and eyes their colour and are fundamental and the balance determines both the colour of our hair or whether our hair is grey. Hair follicles contain pigment cells called melanocytes, which produce two types of melanin; eumelanin (brown or black) and pheomelanin (yellow or red). The balance of these determines your natural hair colour.

The largest determining factor is typically age. As we age melanocytes gradually become less active and eventually stop producing pigment altogether which results in hair which appears grey.

Does everyone turn grey eventually?

Every person will notice some evidence of grey hair as they get older, however the timeframe, rate of growth and volume will vary and is dependent upon a variety of factors both in relation to genetics, lifestyle, ethnicity and diet to name but a few.

Does stress cause grey hair?

Whether stress is a cause of grey hair, is one of the most common questions we hear in-salon. However studies relating to the causes of grey hair are mixed. Recent research suggests that extreme stress can be contributory however in some studies this can in-part be reversed. That being said stress is typically unlikely to be the sole cause of grey hair, and rather stress is likely an accelerated factor particularly if you are genetically predisposed. Stress won’t singlehandedly your hair grey overnight.

Can diet and nutrition cause greying?

Yes, diet and nutrition will undoubtedly play a role in greying hair though it won’t be the sole reason. What is known about the relationship between greying and nutrition is that the following can be supportive:

  • Vitamin B12

  • Iron

  • Copper

  • Zinc

  • Folate

A well-balanced diet, rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients, may help slow the process. However, it won’t completely prevent it if your genetics are leading the way.

Is it possible to prevent grey hair?

At present, there’s no proven formula or method from stopping or reducing greys permanently. While certain colour services can reduce the ratio or visibility of greys, there is no available science supporting claims that any product can be supportive to reversing grey hairs. That being said, there are early studies which display progress in this area which centre on melanin-boosting compounds.

Currently, the best advice for maintaining your hair is to strike a balance between eating well, managing stress, avoiding detrimental environmental factors and smoking which can support the delay of an onset of grey hair.

Are there any medical reasons for premature greying?

Whilst not in every case, in certain rare scenarios the cause of premature greying at a very young age could be a signal of an underlying health condition. These conditions could be (but are not limited to):

  • Autoimmune disorders (such as vitiligo)

  • Thyroid imbalances

  • Anaemia

  • Vitamin B12 deficiency

If you find yourself in a position where you find your hair becoming suddenly patchy, it’s always best to speak to a GP or healthcare professional to rule out medical causes.

Why does some grey hair feel coarse?

Grey hair feeling coarse is a common observation among those with grey hair. Coarser hair can consist of thicker, drier or more stubborn/resistant hair that becomes more challenging to style. Grey hair can often feel more coarse due to the reduced production of sebum, a natural oil produced which serves to product and condition hair. This hair type can also prove to be more porous and prone to frizziness.

If you are seeking to address drier and more coarse hair as a result of your hair turning grey, we offer a Four Step Treatment by JOICO which is highly effective and offers an injection of moisture. At home treatments can too be supportive, though these rarely offer the same-level of benefit as in-salon treatments.

Can I dye my hair grey?

Colouring hair grey is possible, though it isn’t easy and to deliver a grey hair colour is considered a highly specialist colour service. Whilst colouring hair to be grey is possible, colouring existing grey hair is just like any hair colour. Whilst it needs an adapted approach, a bit more care and in some cases an adjusted technique to achieve your desired result, it is very possible. If you’re not sure which hair colour service to book, this blog can help.

Should I embrace my grey hair?

Choosing to embrace your grey hair is a personal choice and there is no right or wrong answer. Grey hair alongside the right haircut and style can look chic, elegant, and modern. The choice needs to strike a balance between your love of grey, if you were to colour however this would like, whether you can manage the upkeep and finding a healthy hair routine to manage the cost. If you’re not ready for colour or just prefer a lower-maintenance routine, working with a stylist to establish a great cut, colour or style is best practice.
