How to care for a men’s hair system FAQ’s

Does a hair system require a new hair routine?

Yes, to a point. However not all those changes require ‘more’ but in some instances, less time! It’s important to remember that a hair system whilst natural hair does have a time limit of roughly six months before it needs replacing therefore caring for your hair system as best as you can will enable you to both maximise your hair system and in some cases exceed the recommend allowance for a hair system. In some cases hair systems won’t make it to six months therefore your routine becomes important. however it doesn’t need to be complicated. In our experience so long as you care for your hair system, using appropriate products and managing your hair system in-salon when advised, there is no reason why you can’t look after it.

When washing your hair system, it’s important to limit shampooing to once every two weeks, instead conditioning only when you would ordinarily shampoo. Whilst shampooing is still important, doing this too frequently will break down the system much more quickly. Conditioning your hair system regularly maintains its condition, visual appeal and to the touch it will remain soft. However whilst you can purchase specific products for your hair system, most conditioners will work sufficiently and asking your Stylist which they would recommend would be sensible.

It’s too worth mentioning from a styling point of view that given it’s not your hair, limiting styling tools such as straighteners is advised avoiding damaging the fibre. Some styling products will be fine too, however again if you are unsure, ask your Stylist.

How often do I visit the salon?

On average every six months for a replacement system and every 2-6 weeks (the average is every month) for removal, cleansing and cutting the back and sides. During these routine appointments, your stylist will check the condition of the hair system, remove it, clean the system and your scalp, reattach it securely, and cut the natural hair around your back and sides for a uniformed look (as opposed to shorter hair on top and longer hair on the sides). If you’re wondering how long men’s hair systems take to apply, read this blog.

When do I need to replace my hair system?

Hair systems are durable but not permanent and will not last typically any longer than six months. Over time, wear and tear will effect and eventually compromise the system leading to a necessary replacement.  It’s worth noting that hair systems that are not well care for can last for as little as three months so it’s worth considering your routine. This is how long men’s hair systems stay on for.

You will know when it’s time to replace your hair system with common signs including thinning or fraying of the hair fibres leading to the overall appearance being less natural. Your stylist will be able to guide you on when it’s time for a replacement, ensuring you’re never caught off guard.

Do I need to use any specific hair system products?

Not specifically. Most gentle shampoo’s and conditioners will be compatible however your Stylist (if in doubt) will be able to make recommendations based upon your specific hair replacement system. We would recommend something that is gentle, sulphate-free and that will be kind to your new hair system.

Conclusion

Caring for a men’s hair system is all about following a set-routine that allows you to look after your hair system ensuring that it looks and feels great for the maximum length of time before a new system is required. Regular salon visits, gentle washing with more regular conditioning, and occasional replacements will keep your hair system looking and feeling its best.
