Curly Haircuts – What’s the best way?

The Wisteria Avenue Journal

Tips for Curly Haircuts

Curly hair doesn’t behave like straight hair, and it shouldn’t be cut like it either. The biggest reason a curly haircut goes wrong is a one-size-fits-all approach — a cut that ignores how curls spring, shrink and sit. Here’s what actually makes the difference, and why curly cutting is its own specialism.

  1. Customised layering: Layering matters for curly hair — it removes weight, prevents that triangular bulk at the bottom and gives curls room to move. But it has to be done carefully. Layers cut in the wrong place can break up the curl pattern and leave you with frizz instead of shape. The skill is reading where each section needs weight removed and where it needs to stay, rather than layering by routine.

  2. A curl-by-curl approach: Most heads of curly hair aren’t one single curl type — the pattern often varies from the crown to the nape to the front. Cutting curl by curl means assessing those sections individually and shaping each to suit how it actually falls. It takes longer than a standard cut, but it’s the difference between a haircut that works with your hair and one that fights it.

  3. Allowing for shrinkage: Curly hair can sit noticeably shorter dry than it looks wet — sometimes by several inches. A stylist who cuts curly hair regularly will account for that spring-up, so the length you discussed is the length you actually get once it’s dry and styled. This is one of the main reasons we’re cautious about cutting curly hair soaking wet without understanding how it dries.

  4. Maintenance and styling at home: A good curly cut is only half the job — how you look after it matters just as much. That means gentle cleansing, plenty of moisture, and the right products for your curl type rather than whatever’s to hand. A stylist who knows curls will send you home knowing how to wash, dry and define them, so the cut still looks good weeks later.

Why this is a specialist job

Curly hair is genuinely harder to cut well than straight hair, and not every stylist is trained or confident with it. We’d always be honest about that — it’s why a proper consultation matters. We look at your curl pattern, density and condition before any scissors come out, and tell you what’s realistic for the shape you’re after.

If you’re not sure where to start, our curly hair service page explains how we approach curly cuts, and our hair diagnosis tool is a quick way to get a sense of your hair before you book. Thinking about colour too? It behaves differently on curls — the best colours for curly hair is worth a read.

The short version: there’s no single “best” curly haircut, because the best cut is the one tailored to your curls. Find a stylist who treats curly hair as its own craft, and you’ll spend far less time fighting your hair and far more time enjoying it.
