Thick Haircut FAQ’s

What are the characteristics of thick hair?

Thick, fine or curly hair, we don’t have much control over however we can work with what we have to great effect. The thickness of hair refers to the density of strands on your scalp rather than the diameter of each strand. People with thick hair often have more hair follicles, resulting in a naturally fuller appearance. So while hair strands can individually be thicker, usually it refers to the number of individual hairs on a head, so people with ‘fine’ hair will generally have less than those with ‘thicker’ hair. While a good head of thick hair can look amazing, it also comes with challenges such as increased weight, tangling, frizz and a tendency to look unruly if not properly managed.

The primary difficulty with thick hair is it’s difficulty in day-to-day maintenance. Humidity can exacerbate frizz, and the density of the hair makes evenly applying products evenly more tricky. That being said, with the right haircut this can greatly support you in adopting a hair routine that isn’t overwhelming nor greatly affected by a change in climate, lifestyle adaptation nor time consuming.

Why is thicker hair difficult to manage?

Anyone with medium-long hair will attest that the greatest challenges with thick hair are weight and frizz. The weight tends to make hair feel flat flat at the roots while presenting as unmanageable from the mid to ends. This imbalance can create a frustrating styling experience, as thick hair often resists shaping or holding a style for long periods. Some hair types, particularly those with a curl or wave can also feel drier too given that moisture struggles to travel along thicker or curly strands.

The other frustration that many with thick hair experience is increased styling times. The density of hair greatly increases styling time when washing and blow drying so this may influence your decision on the time of haircut you seek (your Stylist will be able to make suggestions if this is a consideration).

What are the best haircuts for thick hair?

If the intension is to both improve your haircut and reduce styling time, layering is one of the most effective techniques for reducing weight whilst not sacrificing on the look of your hair. There is a caveat to this; layers don’t need to feel ‘blocky’, in-fact most haircuts where layers are introduced are so soft they are designed to be ‘invisible’ so you can in-effect achieve more movement, a reduction in weight and easier to manage hair!

One of the other plus points with long layers are that they preserve length (so there is rarely a need for a radical chop!). The only scenario where you may need to sacrifice on length is if the splits are no longer salvageable however this isn’t necessarily specific to adopting layers for the first time but rather a reflection on the frequency of haircut. Best case scenario, aim for every two months for a haircut and worst case every three months (think four times per year). If you are thinking of layers, they don’t need to be exclusively for longer styles, for example shoulder length layered haircuts with layers are popular and are considered very manageable. Long layers work particularly well for those who prefer to keep their hair lengthy, as they preserve the length while lightening the weight. If you’re open to shorter styles, a textured lob (long bob) or a pixie cut with soft layers can still look great yet for ease of maintenance can prove really effective.

As a point of reference, if you are considering a one-length haircut while possible, they are more appropriate for fine hair, tend to be less suitable for thick hair. One-length cuts amplify heaviness and make the hair appear ‘blocky’ or triangular. They also don’t support a reduction in day-to-day maintenance when managing thick hair.

How can I make thicker hair more manageable?

It’s important to qualify if your Stylist can do this (not all can), however if you have achieved the right haircut, you’re half-way there already. Some stylists will offer services between haircuts to help reduce weight whether it be adopting thinning techniques and doing it in such a way that it isn’t visible. There are a number of techniques that a Stylist can employ ensuring your hair still looks full but is significantly easier to manage.

The second option in-salon is a pHrizzy-o-therapy treatment which is designed to reduce frizz. It’s kind to the hair, a Vegan formula and no nasty chemicals. This gentle option is popular given it doesn’t cause damage like similar treatments and ensures styling time is much reduced.

Away from the salon, hydrating products, such as masks, moisture intensive conditioners can help control frizz making hair be more cooperative! There are also a handful of styling options from styling creams to serums specific to thick hair that can tame flyaways and add definition.

Another suggestion which is often understated is the frequency of washing can be supportive. This is a double edged sword in some respects; however reducing the washing frequency can be very supportive. Over-washing can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and increased frizz. That being said is oily roots are a problem, there are shampoo and conditioners which can combat this as can avoiding direct hot water from the shower head on the scalp and aggressive use of products when washing on the scalp.

Do hair appointments for thick hair take longer?

Generally, yes. Hair appointments for thick hair do tend to take longer by virtue that there is more hair to cut, dry and style. In some cases, the density of hair means there are as many as three times plus more hair than a client with fine hair so this can greatly contribute to the appointment time. If you do have particularly thick or long hair, it’s worth scheduling a longer appointment. A restyle is generally effective though if you aren’t sure, just ask before booking.

Conclusion

Thick hair may have its challenges, however there is a lot of help out there and we are very accessible to work through options to support your next haircut and work on your hair routine. So whether you opt for long layers, a textured lob, or a pixie, the right style can reduce weight, enhance movement, and make your hair easier to control away from the salon.
