Can hair grow faster FAQ's
Is it possible to make hair grow faster?
Studies have shown that the average persons hair grows at an average rate of about half an inch per month, which equates to 1.5 inches every three months (or 6 inches annually). Factors which influence growth are primarily genetic which are outside anyones control! However your diet, scalp health, frequency of haircut/hair care both in and out of the salon can support hair health and subsequent hair growth positively. While you can’t drastically alter the natural growth rate, you can create an optimal environment for your hair to thrive and a byproduct achieve more growth.
The hair growth cycle consists of three phases:
Anagen (growth phase): This is the active phase where hair grows. It can last anywhere from two to seven years.
Catagen (transition phase): A short phase lasting a few weeks, during which hair stops growing and prepares to shed.
Telogen resting phase): The hair rests before shedding and making way for new growth.
By focusing on maintaining healthy hair and scalp conditions, you can maximise the anagen phase and reduce breakage, giving the appearance of faster-growing hair.
Why does it feel like my hair isn't growing?
Many clients experience frustration, feeling that their hair simply isn’t growing. In reality, hair is aways growing (unless their is an underlying medical problem such as alopecia). The issue is most commonly as a consequence of breakage or split ends, which prevent hair from retaining length.
Here are some common reasons why hair growth may seem stalled:
Breakage: Hair that breaks off at the ends may make it seem like it’s not growing. It is growing, the breakage needs treating before you can embrace any additional length.
Splits: Splits travel up. Once left untreated, split ends can travel up the hair shaft, leading to further damage and the need for trimming. That’s why a lot of people with long hair have thick hair to the roots-mids of hair and gradually getting thinner towards the ends. Regular cuts allow for thicker and fuller hair from roots all the way through to the ends.
Hair care: Abusing heat whether it’s straighteners, not using heat protector or using heat every day is not a healthy starting point. Also, appropriate and gentle hair products and washing hair three times every week is sensible.
Nutritional Deficiencies: Lack of essential vitamins and minerals can impact the health of your hair and slow growth.
What can I do to support hair growth?
You can’t influence your genetics but you can create an environment where hair thrives. Here are some items that you can do:
1. Maintain a balanced diet: Hair is made up of keratin, a protein that requires nutrients to form. A diet rich in proteins, vitamins, and minerals is essential for hair health. Focus on foods like:
- Lean proteins (chicken, fish, eggs, beans)
- Healthy fats (avocados, nuts, seeds)
- Vitamins A, C, D, and E
- Iron and zinc
- Biotin and omega-3 fatty acids
2. Scalp care: A healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair growth. Regularly cleanse your scalp to remove excess oil, dirt, and product buildup. Consider these tips:
- Use a gentle, sulphate-free shampoo.
- Incorporate a scalp massage into your routine to boost blood circulation and stimulate hair follicles.
- Avoid harsh chemicals that can irritate the scalp.
3. Hair damage: Preventing damage is crucial for retaining length and promoting healthy hair. Here’s how:
- Limit the use of heat styling tools and always use a heat protectant.
- Avoid over-brushing or brushing wet hair, as it’s more prone to breakage.
- Choose hairstyles that don’t put excessive tension on your hair.
- Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction while you sleep.
- If you want an in-salon treatment, here’s a great option.
4. Regular haircuts: While it may seem counterintuitive, regular trims are essential for healthy hair growth. Hair grows an average of one inch every two months, but split ends can develop during this time. Left untrimmed, these splits can travel up the hair shaft, causing more breakage and thinning.
By cutting your hair every 8-12 weeks, you’ll remove damaged ends and encourage your hair to grow thicker and healthier over time.
Are there any home remedies for faster hair growth?
Yes and no. The old saying ‘you get what you pay for’ applies more than ever. There are several natural remedies which can support hair health and growth. While they won’t drastically speed up the process, they can enhance the quality and strength of your hair allowing a supportive environment for healthy hair:
- Coconut Oil: Known for its moisturising properties, coconut oil can help reduce protein loss in hair.
- Castor Oil: Rich in ricinoleic acid, castor oil may promote scalp health and enhance hair thickness.
- Aloe Vera: This soothing plant can reduce scalp irritation and improve hydration.
- Rosemary Oil: Some studies suggest that rosemary oil may stimulate hair growth when applied to the scalp.
Conclusion
While it’s impossible to make your hair grow significantly faster, the speed of hair growth is usually not the issue and there lots of options to support healthy and strong hair which will allow for longer and thicker hair over time. The key is striking the balance between regular haircuts, caring for your scalp and preventing damage through heat styling or similar is most crucial. Thereafter, diet and hair care practices in salon and at home can be greatly supportive.
