Curly haircuts in Abingdon — Oxfordshire’s curly-hair specialist.
Curly hair is its own discipline. Each curl has its own shape, weight and direction — and predicting how the finished cut will sit once it’s dry and settled takes specific training, and a lot of practice. The difference shows up two weeks later: a cut that still holds its shape, sits where you want it, and doesn’t need fighting every morning.
Our stylists have specific curly-cut training, and we deliver one curly haircut on most days — four or more on a busy one. For context, most general salons see one every few months, so the practical experience isn’t there. We work with all curl types — waves, loose curls, ringlets, coily, and combinations — using the right technique for the curl pattern in front of us rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. If you’re not sure what curl pattern you have, our curly hair type chart walks through the most common ones.
Most importantly, we listen. You probably already know what doesn’t work for your hair; the consultation starts there. Call or WhatsApp 01235 534705 if you’d like to talk through what your hair needs before booking.
What makes our curly cuts different.
Three things, mainly:
We cut to the curl’s natural shape. Curls have a direction they want to go; the cut works best when it honours that rather than forcing it into a generic outline. We map your curl pattern, agree the silhouette with you, then cut to support how the hair actually behaves.
We treat curls as individual shapes, not bulk hair. Different curl patterns need different techniques — a scissors-over-finger approach on a tight curl creates a different result to point cutting or shaping curl by curl. We use the right technique for the curl pattern you’ve got, with diffusing and finishing tailored to your curls rather than a generic blow-dry.
We teach you what to do at home. Most of a curly cut’s success depends on how you maintain it. Product, brushing (or rather, not brushing), how you dry it, how you sleep on it — we walk through the lot before you leave.
We stock Only Curls in salon — shampoos, conditioners, cremes, gels, oils, and masks formulated specifically for curly hair. We’ll recommend what’s right for you, including products available on the high street if they work just as well.
Curly haircut styles we work with.
We do every variant of curly haircut, from short crops to long layered cuts. Some of the most-requested styles:
The layered curly bob — shorter at the back, gradually longer toward the front, framing the face and drawing the eye to the curl shape. Dynamic, fun, and one of the most-photographed cuts we do.
The curly pixie — a modern, edgy short cut that works particularly well on tighter curl patterns. Lower-maintenance than longer styles, but requires precise cutting to keep the curl shape intact.
The curly shag — textured, layered, slightly undone. Trendy and effortless-looking, suits thicker curly hair, and forgiving of how you wear it day to day.
Long curly layers — for clients who want length but find single-length curly hair becomes bulky. Layers work with the curls’ natural movement and create a softer, more sophisticated finish.
If you’d rather browse by length: short curly haircuts, medium curly haircuts, and long curly haircuts each have their own page with examples.
Coming to us for the first time?
If you’ve been let down at other salons — most of the curly-haired clients we see have been — that’s normal, and the consultation is built around it. You’re not starting from the assumption that we know better than you. We want to hear what’s gone wrong before, what you’ve tried, what you do at home, and what you want from this cut. That conversation is more useful than any single product recommendation.
One practical thing worth knowing: a first curly cut at Wisteria takes longer than a regular cut. We block 90 minutes or more depending on hair length and density. There’s no quick way to cut curls well; we’d rather give the time than rush. Our cancellation policy is on the website if you want to read it before booking.
Caring for your curls between appointments.
Three things matter more than most clients realise:
Hydration over volume. Curly hair tends toward dryness, which then becomes frizz. Leave-in conditioners and moisture-led products — applied to wet hair, not dry — keep curls defined for longer. Most of the products that promise volume sit on the wrong side of this trade-off; they boost lift but dehydrate, which is why curls drop by the end of the day.
Plop and diffuse, don’t blast. After washing, gently squeeze excess water with a microfibre towel or cotton t-shirt — never rub. Then diffuse on a low heat with the dryer cupped close to the curls rather than blasting from above. This preserves the curl pattern; aggressive drying breaks it.
Don’t brush dry curls. Detangle wet, with a wide-tooth comb or your fingers and plenty of conditioner. Brushing dry curls is what creates the “triangle” frizz pattern people complain about.
What it costs, what to expect.
Curly cuts cost more than a standard wash, cut, and blow dry because they take longer and require specific training. Your consultation gives you a firm figure before you book — we don’t surprise anyone with the bill at the end. Our price list covers the broader services.
How long they last: most curly-haired clients come back every three to four months, longer than the eight to twelve weeks typical for straight hair. The shape holds because curls hide regrowth, so the cut keeps its outline for much longer than a precise straight cut would.
Frizz that won’t quit?
If you’ve reached the end of what styling and products can do — particularly with unmanageable, frizzy, or unruly hair — we offer pHrizzy-o-therapy, a vegan anti-frizz treatment that restores the hair’s pH balance and lasts up to 12 weeks. It works alongside a curly haircut, not instead of one, and the consultation is the place to talk through whether it’s right for your hair.
Booking your appointment.
If it’s your first curly cut at Wisteria, book a consultation first. It’s free, gives us a chance to see your hair in person, and means we can book the right amount of time when you do come in for the cut itself.
