Long hair perms in Abingdon
Perm still remain a modern day classic and they haven’t aged one bit! Whether it’s a beach wave, spiral perm or can be a fantastic way to add curls, waves, or body wave, if your hair is very long you might be wondering whether it’s possible to even perm your hair. We always want what we don’t have and curls are no different. However, long hair comes with its own set of unique challenges particularly when perming is introduced to the equation.
In our daily blog we ask our Stylists whether you can perm long hair, what aspects your Stylist will consider and what you might be able to achieve. We will also help you to better understand what you might be able to expect from a perm.
If you are considering something different, our perm service page can help. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705

Long Hair Perms FAQ's
Can you perm really long hair?
Yes, it is absolutely possible to perm long hair but there are caveats which require consideration. Whilst a firm answer as to whether a perm can be achievable will require a Stylist to look over your hair, assuming healthy hair, the right stylist that is able to execute the correct delivery and techniques (and assuming your hair isn’t too heavy), it is possible to achieve beautiful curls. From the viewpoint of a Stylist, the biggest difference between styling long hair versus shorter hair is the weight of long hair can be grossly affected by how well the curl holds. For very long and/or thick hair even naturally curly hair fights gravity and you will find that otherwise tighter curls take the form of looser curls and in some places even straighter sections of hair yet once cut short, the curls ‘spring’ back to tighter curls. Longer hair is typically weighted down and causes curls to fall out. Perms are no different so it’s worth considering the influence of perms when applied to certain types of longer or thicker hair.
By no means should longer hair be a deterrent. In-fact looser curls if achieved are one of the most popular types of perms! Perms can vary from person to person and many clients can still achieve perms on longer hair, however when achieved they do typically represent a looser and more natural looking curl. The process is identical whether hair is shorter or longer however considerations should be made with more hair to work with, and therefore the application process can take longer. There is in most cases an additional charge for longer and thicker styles.
What are the concerns about perming very long hair?
The biggest concern of any is gravity. No matter your hair type, natural curls submit to gravity eventually and perms when applied to very long hair are no different. The trick for a Stylist is to know which perm (size of rods) to go for whilst understanding your anticipated type of perm once gravity has taken effect. In summary once a perm may initially feel tighter, in a short time frame the eventual look will appear softer and more relaxed. The length and thickness of your hair really matters and assuming that your hair is healthy, this will represent the most important factor in whether your hair can be permed and critically what it can look like.
Another factor to consider is the overall health of your hair. Perms consist of a perm lotion and neutraliser and whilst these products are highly effective, perms represent a chemical process. In the case of any hair colour or treatment, if you add a chemical onto existing and already dry or damaged hair, or bleached hair, a perm is likely something that requires prior approval and in some cases can have its limitations.not the best option or at the very least is limiting. If your Stylist shares a concern over the condition of your hair whether it’s over processed, dry, brittle or requires some TLC, this treatment can work.
What will a stylist look for?
Your Stylist will consider seven key factors; what would you like your hair to look like, what does your hair look like right now, how does it feel, what is the hair history, their own instinct based upon past experiences, what could be achieved and your anticipated maintenance. A Stylist will want to ensure most boxes are ticked to ensure compatibility. For example if your brief is healthy hair, beautiful tight curls and something that will last for 12 months and is easy to maintain, it’s unlikely to tick any boxes and your Stylist will seek to address these concerns and suggest alternatives that do meet your brief. Healthy hair is essential and perming on hair which presents a concern is a non-negotiable.
Another consideration for your Stylist and one for which you won’t have any control over is the natural texture of your hair. Certain hair types can struggle to hold a curl (Asian hair being one alongside certain types of very fine and very straight/resistant hair to name but a few). Whilst there is no absolute method of establishing how achievable a perm can be, Stylist intuition in this instance is considered best practice when determining suitability
What type of curl can you achieve on very long hair?
Longer and thicker hair tends to fight gravity and this is a big consideration both in whether a perm is right for you and how satisfactory the result will be both in relation to lifespan and adopting a looser perm (similar to a beach wave in most cases). Whilst this isn’t an exact measurement of what can achieved, most longer and thicker hair types are restricted in that sense and a consultation is advised to determine both suitability and what can be achieved.
For clients with very long hair looking for a more natural, beachy wave, perms are a highly effective option to create volume. This creates soft, relaxed waves that add movement and texture without looking overly styled and reasonably low maintenance too! However for longer and thicker hair types the approach differs slightly given curls fall out so the strategy employed when applying your perm can often reflect perm rods which are often used for tighter curls with a view that when tighter curls fall out, they present a more natural and looser curl in the following days post perm. For this reason above all else, the size of the perm rods plays a crucial role in determining the final result.
Conclusion
Perming very long hair is very possible and with the right Stylist that understands perms and the behaviour of curls, you can achieve a great end result. The two biggest considerations for clients with very long hair is the contribution of weight and condition of the hair when determining both suitability and possible end result. If you are unsure or need guidance, your Stylist or perm expert will be more than happy to help.
