How to make hair thicker FAQ's
Is it possible to achieve thicker hair?
People that are naturally bless with thick hair rely on their genetic makeup. The thickness of hair effectively relates to the size of your hair follicles and the density of hair strands on your scalp. So let’s focus on what you can control; very simply whilst you won’t expect to ever be in a position to double the number of hairs on your scalp what you can do is improve your existing hair by way of the frequency of haircut, the type of haircut (certain haircuts present the illusion of volume much more efficiently – here’s the best hair colours to go with your new haircut for fine hair) whilst making it feel thicker, diet, hair care routines and sensible product usage. Adopting the right strategy can make a sizeable difference.
How can I make my hair thicker?
Achieving thicker hair requires a combination of good practices and the right products. Here are some effective steps:
1. Diet: Arguably the most underrated aspect of thicker hair (alongside haircuts). It’s often the key aspect which is largely never spoken of online nor in-salon. In most cases it’s the aspect which requires most thought and investment and is unlikely to repay you in the short term, however a healthy diet is the foundation for health and the same can be said for achieving stronger and thicker hair. Supportive foods Include those rich in protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins like biotin, zinc, and iron. Eggs, nuts, fish, and leafy greens are excellent choices to support hair growth and strength.
2. Scalp: Most people don’t wash their hair or scalp effectively. your scalp is really essentially for healthy hair and it often finds itself clogged with hair products and dirt. Regular scalp massages to remove buildup and to aid blood circulation to stimulate hair follicles that promote hair growth are too supportive.
3. Products: Not all hair products are effective. Caffeine shampoo’s are highly effective however specific shampoos, conditioners, and treatments designed for fine or thinning hair are great. We use JOICO’s Joifull shampoo in-salon and it’s excellent are presenting the illusion of improved volume. Look for ingredients like keratin, provitamin B5, and aloe vera, which can strengthen and volumise your hair.
4. Heat: Straighteners (particularly regular usage) and hair dryers or heat styling tools without heat protection are big no-no’s. These weaken the hair and cause breakage leading to thinner ends.
5. Treatments: While at-home treatments are helpful, in-salon treatments are incredibly effective and represent excellent value for money. They also don’t necessitate the need to regularity so once every so often is better than daily in this instance.
Do regular haircuts help?
It’s one of the least exciting answers but it’s a big YES. Regular haircuts are the sole most important component for maintaining hair health in general. As a byproduct of a regular haircut, you will inevitably achieve thicker hair (so long as its at regular intervals). One haircut followed by no further haircuts isn’t supportive. While it may seem counterintuitive to cut hair when trying to grow it, trimming split ends prevents further breakage. Hair grows approximately one inch per month, but split ends can cause strands to weaken and break, especially after the first few weeks of splitting. Studies show that hair grows (on average) half an inch every month. We therefore have a strong indication where your hair will be in two months, three months and at six month intervals. If we utilise the example of three months, view it as 1.5 inches of regrowth, sacrificing 0.5 inches and gaining 1 inch of healthy growth as opposed to 1.5 inches of unhealthy hair growth. It only takes a further three months (3 inches of split/thinning ends) to recognise that your hair then requires a more radical haircut.
Many clients with fine hair report frustration when their hair seems to stop growing at a certain length. The truth is, hair is growing, but splits and breakage prevent it from retaining length. Addressing these splits with regular trims is key to achieving both thickness and length. Here’s our top 10 recommended haircuts for fine hair.
Is there anything I can do at home?
There are plenty of at-home practices to improve the appearance and health of your hair:
1. Scalp care: You can do this yourself, however if you invest in a scalp brush, they are effective at scalp massages. This increases blood flow and ensures your hair follicles receive essential nutrients.
2. Hair masks: There is a case to make for in-salon treatments and the best formula is combining in-salon treatments alongside those that can be done at home. Your local hair salon should be able to recommend a suitable product however something at least once per week can support strengthening your hair.
3. Avoid overwashing: There is a balance to be had when washing your hair. Too little can have a negative impact on your scalp however too frequently strips it of natural oils, leaving it dry and prone to breakage. Aim to wash your hair no more than three times a week.
4. Protection: If you are going to use heat styling, ensure it’s restricted usage and heat protector is applied beforehand. Many clients too swear by switching to silk or satin pillowcases to reduce friction while you sleep, minimising breakage.
5. Volumising products: Volumising shampoo and conditioners are incredibly effective. These are your bread and butter products, however if you find the time to style, volumising powders and root-lifting sprays can add instant thickness and texture. Apply these products sparingly to avoid buildup
Conclusion
While you can’t change your genetic make up, you can greatly influence your hair health and your frequency of hair appointment. Working with a Stylist that fundamentally understands fine hair can really add value in this area. They will ‘get’ how your hair behaves, what it needs to present differently and what you can do away from the salon to maximise your hair.
If you’re looking for radical results, one further option is hair extensions. Here’s how hair extensions can support fine hair.
