Spiral perms are the perm equivalent of a statement piece. Where most modern perms are designed to look like natural texture you might just happen to have, a spiral perm is unmistakably a perm — defined, dramatic, corkscrew curls that catch attention. If you want the curls to be the look, this is the perm style.
Spiral perms are also one of the more technical perm styles. The hair is wrapped vertically around long perm rods rather than horizontally around shorter ones, which is what produces the elongated corkscrew shape. Done badly, you get tight, frizzy curls that look uniform and dated. Done well, you get cascading spirals with definition and bounce that hold their shape for months.
Who suits a spiral perm?
Spiral perms work best on medium-to-long hair — typically shoulder length and longer. Length is what gives the spiral its full corkscrew shape; shorter hair tends to produce a tighter, less elongated curl that loses the drama of the style.
The other consideration is your relationship with attention. Spiral perms are visible. Clients who come to us for this perm style usually do so because they want their hair to be a feature — for an event, a new chapter, or simply because they’ve decided this is the look they want for the next few months. If you’re looking for something more subtle, a beach wave perm or volumising perm is likely a better fit.
What to expect from the appointment
A spiral perm takes longer than other perm styles because of the wrapping technique — expect to be in the chair for two and a half to three and a half hours depending on your hair length. We talk through curl size at the start, do a strand test to confirm the perm solution timing, and then work through the wrapping carefully. The processing time, neutralising and finishing make up the rest.
You leave with damp hair that’s already curled. The first 48 to 72 hours are critical — no washing, no products, no tying up. After that the curls have set and you’re back to normal styling.
How long does a spiral perm last?
Typically three to six months. Spiral perms don’t “drop out” in the same way looser perms can — they tend to relax gradually as new growth comes through rather than losing their shape altogether. Many clients come back for a refresh once the unpermed roots have grown out enough to be visible, rather than waiting for the perm to fully drop.
Pricing for a spiral perm starts from £95 at Wisteria Avenue, in line with our other perm types — the variable is your hair length and density, not the perm style itself. We’ll confirm specific pricing at consultation.
