The Korean perm, for men — at our Abingdon salon.

A Korean perm — or K-perm — is a soft, modern perm built for natural-looking movement rather than tight curls. Using larger rods, heat and careful placement, it introduces a soft bend and volume to hair that’s very fine, very flat and very straight — the kind of hair that sits limp and won’t hold a shape on its own. It’s the effortless, slightly-tousled texture you see on K-pop and K-drama hair, but the hair type it’s designed for is far more common than that association suggests. It’s become one of the most popular grooming services we do for men, and for good reason — it gives straight hair something to actually work with, with very little daily effort. We’ve covered the full how-it-works in our Korean perm guide; this page is about getting one done, and done well, here.

Call or WhatsApp us on 01235 534705 if you’d like to talk through whether a Korean perm is right for you.

Built for fine, flat, straight hair — whoever it belongs to.

Here’s the thing worth clearing up, because it stops a lot of men booking who’d genuinely suit it: the Korean perm isn’t only for Asian hair. The look is associated with it — and there’s a reason for that. Asian hair tends to grow very straight and flat, almost perpendicular from the scalp, with little natural bend, so the K-perm was essentially designed to give that kind of hair some soft movement and volume. But the hair type it’s built for — very fine, very flat, very straight — isn’t exclusive to any one group. Plenty of men have exactly that hair and rule the style out because every reference photo is a K-pop idol.

So if your hair falls dead straight and sits flat no matter what you do, this is built for your hair type, full stop. All it’s really doing is introducing a soft bend and a bit of volume to hair that has none of its own — a gentle S-bend or a relaxed “C” curve rather than anything that reads as a “curl.” Done well, a lot of people won’t register it as permed at all; they’ll just notice your hair finally sits the way you want it to.

Who it actually suits.

Korean perms work on most hair types, but they’re at their best on fine to medium, straight or flat hair — exactly the hair that tends to sit limp and resist styling. If your hair falls flat no matter what you do, this is the service that gives it body and texture it’ll hold. Thicker hair can absolutely be permed too, but it usually needs the right cut shape alongside it so the wave doesn’t read as bulk — which is exactly the sort of thing we work out at the consultation.

It’s worth being straight about who it’s not right for, too: heavily bleached, over-processed or badly damaged hair doesn’t take a perm well, and forcing it risks breakage. If your hair’s been through a lot, we’ll tell you honestly at the consultation rather than take your money and hope — sometimes the answer is “let’s get the condition right first.”

Every perm starts with a consultation.

A perm is a chemical process and the result is, by its nature, long-lasting — so we don’t rush into one. Every Korean perm here starts with a proper consultation, where we assess your hair’s condition, talk through the look you’re after, and work out the right approach: rod size, curl pattern, how much wave, and whether a cut alongside it will help the shape sit the way you want. No two perms are the same, which is exactly why this stage matters — it’s where a good result is decided, long before any solution goes near your hair.

We do a great many perms — the majority of them for men — and that experience is the difference between a perm that looks intentional and one that looks like a mistake. The most common way a men’s perm goes wrong elsewhere is going too tight on short hair, which tips into a “ramen curl” look fast. Getting the rod size and curl strength right for your length and hair type is the whole game, and it’s what the consultation and an experienced hand are for.

The honest part: time, upkeep and styling.

A Korean perm is an investment of time on the day. From start to finish — consultation, prep, washing, wrapping, processing, neutralising, rinsing and styling, plus a cut if you’re having one — it typically takes two to three hours, depending on your hair’s length and thickness. It’s not a quick in-and-out, and that’s reflected in how we book it.

The good news is the upkeep afterwards is genuinely low. The perm grows out gradually over a few months rather than washing out, so there’s no sharp regrowth line to chase. And the day-to-day styling is about as forgiving as it gets — once the hair’s dry the wave settles into a soft shape on its own, and most men need only a small amount of a lightweight product on damp hair, then air-dry or a quick rough blow-dry. The whole point is hair that does something without a heated tool every morning.

On cost: a perm is one of the more straightforward services to price, but it still depends on your hair’s length, thickness and the look you’re after, so we don’t quote a single figure here — your consultation gives you a firm price before you commit. Our current price list is on a separate page and is always kept up to date.

Booking your appointment.

If it’s your first perm — and for most men it is — book a consultation first. It’s the right starting point: we’ll look at your hair, talk through what’s realistic, and make sure a Korean perm is genuinely the right call before you commit to the appointment. Bring reference pictures of the look you’re after; they help us understand the amount of wave and the shape you have in mind. If you want the full background on how the process works, our Korean perm guide walks through it end to end.

Your Questions, Answered

Frequently asked.

How can I book a perm appointment at Wisteria Avenue?+

Perms are by consultation first, then appointment. You can book either online at wisteriaavenue.co.uk/bookings, by phone on 01235 534705 (Tuesday to Saturday), by email at bookings@wisteriaavenue.co.uk (please include a contact number), or by WhatsApp — save 01235 534705 as a contact and send us a message.

Do I need a consultation for a first-time perm?+

Yes — first-time perm clients have a free, no-obligation in-salon consultation before booking the appointment itself. The consultation is where we test your hair strength, talk through which perm type would suit you, and answer any questions. There's no pressure — many clients have the consultation and take time to think before committing.

Do you offer perm-specific hair products?+

Yes — we stock JOICO products in salon and recommend specific products to suit your perm. We can also offer in-salon treatments to keep permed hair in good condition between appointments.

Do you do every type of perm?+

Yes — spiral, beach wave, volumising and men's perms, including combinations. Pictures help if you have a particular look in mind — bring inspiration to your consultation. Pricing doesn't usually vary much by perm type; it's more about hair length and density.

I don't know where to start — can you help?+

Of course — most of our perm clients are either new to perms or haven't had one in years. The consultation is exactly for this. We'll show you examples, ask about your routine, and recommend what would actually work for your hair rather than trying to sell you a specific style.
