Volumising Perms Appointments

A volumising perm isn’t a “curly hair” perm. It’s a perm designed primarily to add lift and fullness — not visible curl. If you have fine, flat or thinning hair and you’ve ever wished it would just stay big after styling, this is the perm style worth considering.

The technique focuses on the roots and crown. Larger perm rods are placed at the root area, restructuring the bonds there so the hair physically stands up more than it does naturally. The mid-lengths and ends keep more of their original texture. The finished result reads as “much fuller hair”, not as “permed hair”.

Who suits a volumising perm?

Volumising perms are the perm style we most often recommend for fine hair, hair that’s thinning with age or hormonal changes, and hair that goes flat by mid-afternoon no matter what products you use. The lift is genuine — it comes from physical restructuring of the hair at the root, not from temporary styling — so it doesn’t drop out during the day.

This perm style also works well for clients who want the practical benefits of a perm (less styling time, more body, easier blow-drying) without committing to a visible change in texture. If you want a softer curl pattern as well as volume, a beach wave perm may be a better fit. If you want defined curl, look at our spiral perm option.

What to expect from a volumising perm

The appointment is shorter than other perm types because we’re working primarily at the root area rather than wrapping the entire length of the hair. Expect to be in the chair for around two hours.

The visual difference is most noticeable when your hair is dry and styled — the lift at the roots makes blow-dries look fuller, ponytails sit higher, and overall the hair has more presence. When wet, the perm is subtle. Some clients are initially surprised by how understated the perm looks when they leave the salon; the full effect comes through with normal styling at home.

How long does a volumising perm last?

Typically four to six months — slightly longer than perms that create defined curls, because the perm pattern is more subtle and the gradual relaxing is less noticeable. Most clients come back when they start noticing the lift has gone, rather than waiting for the perm to drop completely.

One thing worth knowing: the volume effect doesn’t compete with new haircuts. If you’re getting a regular cut, the perm continues to lift the roots regardless of the length you keep the ends at. Many clients pair the perm with a new cut to refresh both at the same time.

Volumising perms start from £95 at Wisteria Avenue. A specific quote follows the consultation.

Your Questions, Answered

Frequently asked.

What is a volumising perm?+

A volumising perm is designed primarily to add lift and fullness at the roots — not to create defined curls throughout the hair. It uses larger rods placed mainly at the crown and root area, which gives the hair body without dramatically changing its texture below. The end result reads as "fuller hair" rather than "curly hair".

Is a volumising perm right for fine or thin hair?+

Often yes — this is the perm type most commonly recommended for fine hair. By restructuring the bonds at the root, the hair physically stands up more than it does naturally, which creates the perception of much more density. It's a popular option for clients whose hair has thinned with age or hormonal changes.

Will a volumising perm look curly?+

No — that's the distinction. A small amount of texture comes through, but the goal is fullness, not curl. If you want defined curl or wave, a spiral or beach wave perm is the right route instead. We'll show you the difference at consultation.
