Why East Asian hair is cut differently.

This isn’t marketing — it’s structural. East Asian hair has the largest diameter and the greatest cross-sectional area of any hair type, which makes each strand genuinely thicker, stronger and more resistant than Caucasian or Afro hair. It also has a rounder cross-section, which is what gives it that characteristically straight, glossy fall. What that means in the chair is simple but important: the hair doesn’t disguise anything. Because it’s straight and falls cleanly, it shows every line — a graduation, a layer, a slightly heavy section — where wavier hair would soften and hide it. Because it’s strong and resistant, it springs back rather than yielding the way finer hair does. So the cutting approach has to be different: the way you build shape, where you place weight, how you texturise, how you account for the way it will actually sit once it’s dry. A stylist who cuts it like Caucasian hair gets caught out — and that’s exactly the experience so many clients describe having elsewhere before they find us.
