Keratin bond hair extensions are one of the most popular choices of hair extensions. Like others, keratin bonds allow you to introduce length, volume or both and they are particularly effective with finer and shorter hair types given they are very discreet, don’t add too much weight and they can blend seamlessly.
For clients in Oxfordshire considering hair extensions, the world of hair extensions can feel overwhelming so if you are unsure, our hair extensions in-salon consultations work through your options including the pros and cons for each application type, maintenance, availability, logistics and everything in-between. In our daily, we take a look at what keratin bond hair extensions are and when keratin bond extensions are bad for you.
For more information about our hair colour options, visit our keratin bond hair extensions service page. Alternatively for all of our hair extension options, see our hair extensions service page. Keratin Bond Extensions FAQ's
What are keratin bond extensions
Keratin bond hair extensions are a form of hair extensions method. These are typically small batches of hair held together with keratin ‘tips’, a natural protein that is also found in your hair. The extensions are applied in a discreet manner just off your root to sections of hair forming a secure bond. The end result is a soft looking finish that blends your new hair with your existing.
Keratin bond extensions are a favourite among clients, particularly those with fine and/or shorter hair because they are discreet and long-lasting without the weight of a comparable application method such as nano rings. On average you can expect keratin bonds to last up to three months before reapplication is necessary.
When are keratin bond extensions bad for you?
Keratin bonds are generally safe in the same way as hair colour is safe when applied and utilised sensibly. However if they aren’t cared for and consideration isn’t given to your health of hair upon removal and reapplication, your Stylist will consult with you to decipher best practice whilst recommending aftercare and what and when they recommend a future appointment. The main risks come from improper application, poor maintenance, or overuse.
The most common issue with clients is failure to care for your own hair. We recommend haircuts after six months and in some cases a supportive treating and rest from hair extensions. Regular use of hair extensions over a long period (years) isn’t helpful nor supportive of healthy hair. Second, aftercare is important. Abrasive hair products, aggressive use of a brush when detangling and not maintaining your extensions can accelerate breakage over time unnecessarily.
What do Stylists recommend when having keratin bond hair extensions?
Your stylist will make recommendations ensuring best practice that best cares for your own hair and your keratin bonds. These will help to prioritise hair health whilst keeping your keratin bond extensions in the best condition possible. Typically, extensions should be removed and reapplied every three months. This allows your natural hair to grow without additional weight pulling on the bonds.
During the stage of reapplication (usually somewhere between 2-4 months following the initial application), this offers your Stylist the opportunity to assess the health of your natural hair and address any damaged ends. Most stylists recommend that keratin bonds be reapplied no more than two-three times per set of extensions to ensure maximum lifespan. Over time the extensions become more worn and fragile as time passes..
Do you ever need to give your hair a rest from keratin bond extensions?
Yes, it helps a lot. If anything this will be the single most important component of hair health. Long-term use of hair extensions will cause issues further down the line. Short to medium term, most forms of hair extensions if undertaken by an experienced Stylist won’t create issues, however strong aftercare, managing expectations, haircuts and rest when needed go some way to supporting your long-term hair health. So long as you follow your Stylists recommended plan, you won’t encounter many obstacles. While keratin bond extensions are designed to be gentle, continuously wearing them without a break can lead to cumulative stress on your hair. Most stylists will advocate taking a break of at least a few weeks between extension sets after a certain timeframe.
Conclusion
Keratin bond hair extensions are not inherently bad for you, in-fact they are reasonably safe all things considered! However just like most services, when neglected or applied without care and attention in mind this can create issues which are largely avoidable when addressed in good time. The benefits of keratin bonds however ensure that they are one of the more cost-effective forms of application, they can introduce length, volume and they blend seamlessly.
