Hair systems for men over 50 in Abingdon, Oxfordshire
Hair loss is something that affects the majority of men at some point in their lives and for many, it becomes most noticeable in their fifties and beyond. Whether it’s a gradually receding hairline, thinning on top, or more significant hair loss that’s developed over time, the impact on confidence can be real and significant regardless of age.
The good news is that modern hair systems are no longer the preserve of younger men. In fact, some of the most satisfied hair system clients we see at Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon are men over fifty who spent years either accepting hair loss they weren’t comfortable with, or exploring options that didn’t feel right, before discovering that a hair system was exactly what they’d been looking for.
If you’re over fifty and considering a hair system for the first time, this guide is written for you.
Hair Systems for Men Over 50 FAQ's
Why are men over 50 choosing hair systems?
There’s a generational shift happening in how men approach hair loss. Where previous generations were more likely to simply accept thinning or baldness as inevitable, men today of all ages are more open to exploring their options. Hair systems have been a significant part of that shift.
For men over fifty specifically, a hair system offers something that other solutions often don’t: an immediate, natural-looking result without surgery, without medication, and without a lengthy waiting period. At a stage of life where time and practicality matter, that’s a meaningful advantage.
The other factor is confidence. Many of our clients over fifty tell us that their hair loss has affected how they feel in professional settings, socially, or simply when they look in the mirror. A hair system addresses that directly and the results, when done properly, are genuinely undetectable.
What makes hair systems particularly suitable for older men?
There are a few reasons why hair systems work especially well for men over fifty.
Grey blending is straightforward: One of the most common concerns we hear from older clients is whether a hair system will match their existing hair, particularly if they have a mix of natural and grey. The honest answer is that colour matching at this stage is often simpler than clients expect. Grey and salt-and-pepper systems are readily available and blend naturally with existing hair. The result looks exactly like your hair only fuller.
Lifestyle compatibility: Men over fifty tend to have a clearer sense of their lifestyle and daily routine, which makes the aftercare and maintenance planning much more straightforward. The commitment to maintenance appointments every three to five weeks and some simple aftercare at home fits naturally into most routines once established are too important.
Surgical alternatives are less appealing: Hair transplants carry greater risks as you get older, and the recovery period is longer. Many men over fifty who’ve looked into surgery conclude that the risk, cost, and downtime simply isn’t worth it. A hair system offers comparable results without any of those downsides.
The technology has caught up: If you looked into hair systems ten or fifteen years ago and dismissed them, it’s worth revisiting. Modern systems are significantly more advanced, lighter, more natural in appearance, and far more comfortable to wear day to day than older versions were.
What can I expect from my first appointment?
If you’ve never had a hair system before, knowing what to expect can make a significant difference to how comfortable you feel walking through the door.
At Wisteria Avenue, every new hair system client starts with a free consultation. This is a relaxed, private, one-on-one conversation in our dedicated first-floor salon, away from the main salon floor and with a separate entrance. There’s no pressure, no obligation, and no expectation that you’ve made any decisions before you arrive.
During the consultation we’ll cover your hair history, what you’re hoping to achieve, colour matching, the type of system that would suit you best, what the ongoing maintenance looks like, and what the costs involved are. We’ll also be honest with you if we think a hair system isn’t the right solution for your specific situation. That doesn’t happen often, but we’d rather tell you upfront than have you commit to something that won’t deliver what you’re looking for.
If you decide to go ahead, your application appointment usually follows a minimum of a week in the future and can take approximately three hours and takes place in the same private environment. You’ll leave with a full head of natural-looking hair and no downtime required.
What is life with a hair system like?
One of the questions men over fifty ask most often is what the ongoing commitment looks like in practice. It’s a fair question and deserves a straight answer.
Maintenance appointments are every three to five weeks. These are shorter than your initial appointment and are simply about keeping your system looking its best, reattaching where necessary, checking the condition of the system, and making any adjustments needed. Most clients find that once they’re in a routine, these appointments feel no different from a regular haircut.
At home, the main things to remember are to limit shampooing to once or twice a month at most – conditioner is your friend here, and to avoid excessive heat styling. None of this is onerous, and we go through it all in detail at your first appointment so you feel confident before you leave.
A well-maintained hair system typically lasts around six months, with some clients getting closer to nine months from theirs. At the end of its lifespan, you simply get a new one . The process becomes familiar and straightforward very quickly.
What are common hair system concerns?
“Will it look natural at my age?”: Yes, provided it’s fitted and cut correctly by someone who knows what they’re doing. The key is accurate colour matching, including any grey, and a haircut that suits your age, face shape, and style. A good hair system should look completely indistinguishable from natural hair.
“Will people be able to tell?”: This is the question almost every new client asks. The honest answer is no, not if the system is well-fitted and properly maintained. Our clients wear their hair systems 24/7 without issue at work, at the gym, socially and at home without any issues.
“Am I too old for this?”: There is no upper age limit on wanting to feel good about how you look. We’ve fitted hair systems for clients across a wide age range and the results are consistently excellent regardless of age. If anything, the natural greying and thinning that comes with age makes a well-matched hair system look particularly convincing.
“What if I decide it’s not for me?”: Unlike surgery, a hair system is entirely reversible. If you try it and decide it isn’t right for you, you simply stop. There’s no permanent commitment and no lasting impact on your natural hair.
How can I book an appointment?
