Perm Aftercare: Everything You Need to Know to Make Your Curls Last
The first 48 hours after a perm are the most important. What you do and don’t do in that window has a direct impact on how well your curls set, how long they last, and the overall condition of your hair in the weeks that follow.
Perm Aftercare FAQ's
What should you avoid in the first 48 hours after a perm?
The 48-hour window after a perm is when the chemical bonds in your hair are still settling into their new shape. Disrupting that process prematurely is the most common reason curls drop or lose definition early.
- Don’t wash your hair: This is the most important rule. Washing within 48 hours – even with water alone – can interrupt the bonding process and cause your curls to relax before they’ve fully set. Wait the full 48 hours before any contact with water.
- Don’t tie your hair up: Bobbles, clips, or anything that puts pressure on the hair will leave a mark or distort the curl pattern before it has set. Leave it down and untouched as much as possible.
- Don’t use heat: No hairdryer, straightener, or curling iron for the first 48 hours. The heat interferes with the chemical process and can cause uneven results.
- Don’t sleep on wet hair: If your hair has any moisture in it – from humidity or light contact with water, try to ensure it’s fully dry before you sleep. Cotton pillowcases create friction that can disturb the curl pattern; a silk or satin pillowcase is worth considering long-term.
How should you wash permed hair?
Once the 48-hour window has passed, washing permed hair correctly is what determines how well it holds up over time. One thing worth knowing: products designed specifically for curly hair often label their shampoos as cleansers rather than shampoos. This isn’t a marketing quirk – it reflects a genuinely gentler formulation that cleans without stripping.
- Use a sulphate-free shampoo or curl cleanser: Sulphates are harsh cleansing agents that strip natural oils and accelerate curl loosening in permed hair. A sulphate-free cleanser does the job without that level of aggression. We use and recommend the Only Curls range in salon – their cleanser is formulated specifically for curl-treated hair and is one of the best we’ve used.
- Condition every wash: Permed hair is more porous than unprocessed hair and loses moisture quickly. A good conditioner applied from mid-length to ends, left for a couple of minutes before rinsing, makes a significant difference to how the curl looks and feels.
- Wash less frequently: Two to three times per week is a reasonable target for most people. Daily washing is hard on any hair, but particularly on permed hair.
- Don’t rub with a towel: Rough towel-drying disrupts the curl pattern and causes frizz. Scrunch gently with a soft towel or microfibre cloth instead, leaving the hair damp rather than wet before styling.
How should you style permed hair after washing?
This is where most people go wrong – not through neglect, but simply because nobody showed them the method. The way you apply product and dry your hair has as much impact on the final result as the products themselves.
Here’s the approach we recommend to our own clients, using the Only Curls range:
- Start with towel-dried hair: After washing, gently scrunch out excess water with a soft towel or microfibre cloth. You want the hair damp – not dripping, not dry. This is the right starting point for product application.
- Combine a curl cream and curl gel: Take a small amount of curl cream and curl gel and combine them in your palms before applying. Using both together – rather than separately – gives you the moisture of the cream with the hold and definition of the gel. The Only Curls Curl Cream and Curl Gel combination works particularly well for this.
- Apply by scrunching upward: Work the product through from mid-length to ends, scrunching upward toward the scalp to encourage the curl to form. For longer hair, a curl brush or Denman brush can help distribute product evenly and define each curl more precisely — rake through gently from root to tip, then scrunch.
- Diffuse on medium heat and medium speed: Attach a diffuser to your dryer and use a medium heat and medium speed setting – not high. Place sections of hair into the diffuser bowl and hold, rather than moving it continuously. Work around the head in sections.
- Stop when you see the first signs of frizz: This is the most important step people miss. When the curls start to show early frizz at the surface, that’s your signal to stop diffusing – not to keep going in the hope it resolves. The hair is dry enough. Continuing past this point breaks up the curl definition and creates the frizz you’re trying to avoid.
Can you use heat on permed hair?
Yes, but with care, and not in the first 48 hours. After the initial settling period, diffusing on medium heat as described above is the recommended approach. Direct heat from straighteners or curling irons is a different matter – used regularly, they will progressively relax the curl pattern and undo the perm faster than anything else.
If you do use heat tools after the initial period, always apply a heat protectant first. Permed hair is more vulnerable to heat damage than unprocessed hair, and the effects are cumulative.
Fine to use
- Diffuser on medium heat
- Cool air setting on dryer
- Air drying
- Heat protectant spray
Avoid or use sparingly
- Straighteners
- Curling irons
- High heat blow-drying
- Diffusing past first frizz
how long does a perm last?
A perm typically lasts between three and six months, though this varies depending on hair type, how fast your hair grows, and how consistently you follow the aftercare routine. Hair that grows quickly will see the new growth — unpermed – become more visible sooner, which is usually the point at which most people consider a refresh.
The curl pattern itself can last longer than six months in some cases, particularly on coarser or more resistant hair types. On finer hair, or hair that was previously chemically treated, the curl may soften more quickly.
When can you colour your hair after a perm?
The general guidance is to wait at least two weeks after a perm before applying any colour. Both processes involve chemicals that alter the hair structure, and doing them in close succession increases the risk of damage, breakage, and unpredictable results.
Ideally, if you’re planning both a perm and a colour, discuss the order and timing with your stylist before either appointment. In most cases, colouring first and perming second – with adequate time between – produces the most predictable results.
If you have questions about your perm or want to book a follow-up appointment, we’re at the salon in Abingdon Wednesday through Saturday. You’re welcome to call or WhatsApp us on 01235 534705 – we’re happy to answer questions between appointments too.
