Spring Hair Ideas for a Fresh Start

Spring is the season that makes most people think about freshening up their hair. The light gets brighter, moods lift, and there’s a natural pull towards something a little lighter and more uplifting than the deeper tones of winter. If you’re thinking about a change, here are three of the most popular ways to refresh your colour for spring, from the team at Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon.

Highlights — subtle but noticeable

Highlights are a year-round favourite, and they’re especially well suited to spring. If you’re broadly happy with your colour and your current level of upkeep, highlights are a way to add depth, dimension and a bit of brightness without committing to a full colour change. Chosen well, they give a sun-kissed, natural effect or soft transitions of tone.

Brown hair with blonde highlights is the classic, but highlights don’t have to be conventional — they can also be the vehicle for something more creative and vibrant if you want to stand out a little this spring. It’s worth talking through the options at a consultation.

Full head tint — an all-over change

A full head tint, also called an all-over colour, is the simplest concept of the three: a single shade covering all of the hair. It’s the right choice when you want a clean, uniform result or a proper change of colour. Lighter shades come into their own in spring — blondes, lighter browns and reds are all popular as the season brightens. Worth knowing: an all-over colour is the higher-maintenance option, because regrowth at the roots will show and need topping up.

Lowlights — depth instead of brightness

Lowlights are the most misunderstood of the three, so they’re worth explaining. In simple terms, they’re the reverse of highlights: instead of weaving in lighter pieces, your colourist weaves in shades darker than your base colour. The effect is depth and a richer, multi-tonal look rather than added brightness.

There are two ways to go with them. A soft, subtle lowlight stays within one or two levels of your base colour for gentle depth. A higher-contrast lowlight uses shades three or four levels from your base — bolder, more striking, and a good option if you want to stand out. Which suits you depends on the look you’re after, and it’s an easy thing to talk through with your stylist.

Not sure which to choose?

Highlights, a full head tint and lowlights each do something different — brightness, an all-over change, or depth — and the right one depends on your hair, your starting colour and how much maintenance you want. That’s exactly what a free, no-obligation colour consultation is for. Book in and we’ll talk through your spring colour properly before anything is decided.
