Tips for managing and styling long hair

The Wisteria Avenue Journal

Caring for Long Hair

Long hair looks wonderful, but length brings its own demands. The ends of long hair are the oldest part — they’ve been through years of washing, brushing, heat and weather — so keeping long hair looking good is as much about care as it is about styling. Here are the habits our Abingdon stylists recommend most.

  1. Keep up regular trims: It sounds counterintuitive when you’re trying to keep length, but skipping trims is the quickest way to lose it. Split ends travel up the hair shaft if left, meaning more has to come off later. A trim every 8–12 weeks removes damage before it spreads and keeps the ends looking healthy.

  2. Nourish and hydrate: Long hair needs more moisture than shorter hair simply because the ends are older and drier. A conditioner suited to your hair type, plus a regular deep-conditioning treatment, makes a real difference. We can recommend the right products for your hair when you’re in.

  3. Detangle gently: Long hair tangles, especially when wet — and wet hair is at its most fragile. Use a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush, and always work from the ends upwards, never from the roots down. A leave-in conditioner or detangling spray makes the job easier and reduces breakage.

  4. Use protective styles: Braids, buns and ponytails keep long hair contained and reduce the friction and tangling that cause damage. The key is not to pull tight — tight styles stress the hairline — and to use snag-free ties rather than elastic bands.

  5. Be careful with heat: Heat is one of the biggest causes of damage to long hair. Always use a heat protectant, keep tools on a moderate setting, and give your hair heat-free days where you can. Plaiting damp hair overnight is an easy way to wake up with soft waves and no heat at all.

  6. Make the most of updos: Length gives you options shorter hair doesn’t — chignons, twisted buns, half-up styles. They’re practical for keeping hair off your face and smart enough for any occasion, and they double as protective styling.

  7. Try effortless waves: A texturising or sea salt spray on damp hair, scrunched and left to air dry, gives a relaxed wave with minimal effort. You can build the same look with a curling wand if you prefer more definition.

A quick honest word

The single biggest thing that keeps long hair looking good is condition, not styling — beautiful styling can’t disguise dry, damaged ends. If you’re growing your hair, our guide on growing your hair covers how to do it well, and if your length is also coloured, why hair colour fades is worth a read, since long coloured hair needs a little extra care. A bond-building treatment like Olaplex can also help keep longer hair strong.

Long hair rewards a bit of looking after. If you’d like the right cut to keep your length manageable, our guide to the best long haircuts is a good start — or book a consultation and we’ll talk through a care and styling routine that suits your hair.
