3 Best Short Haircuts

The Wisteria Avenue Journal

Our Top 3 Short Haircuts

A short haircut can be one of the most confident, freeing changes you make — but “short” covers a lot of ground, and the right choice depends on your face shape, hair type and how much styling you want to do. Here are the three short cuts our Abingdon stylists recommend most, and who each one tends to suit.

  1. The pixie cut: A true classic — short, sharp and full of character. A pixie frames the face, draws attention to the eyes and cheekbones, and can be worn soft and feminine or bold and textured. It’s lower effort day-to-day, though it does need regular trims to hold its shape. If it’s caught your eye, our dedicated guide to the pixie haircut goes into who it suits and how to wear it.

  2. The bob: Probably the most versatile short cut there is. A bob can be blunt and polished, soft and tousled, or angled and asymmetric — and it can be tailored to almost any face shape and hair texture. It’s a great “short but not too short” option if you’re easing into shorter hair. Our guides to the bob and the asymmetrical bob cover the variations.

  3. The undercut: For something bolder, an undercut — closely trimmed hair at the side or nape, with length left on top — creates real contrast and edge. It’s a striking look, but it’s a genuine commitment: growing out a shaved section takes patience. We’d always talk it through honestly first. If you’re weighing it up, is it worth getting an undercut? is a good read.

Choosing the right short cut for you

An honest word: a short haircut shows off a cut’s quality — there’s less hair to hide behind, so shape and precision matter more. The “best” short cut isn’t the one trending online, it’s the one that suits your face shape, works with your hair’s natural texture and fits how much time you want to spend styling. Our guide to choosing a haircut for your face shape is a useful starting point.
