What Is a Scandi Hairline? The Technique Explained

The Wisteria Avenue Journal

The Scandi hairline, explained.

You’ve probably seen it on TikTok — a soft halo of brightness right at the hairline, the kind of colour Scandinavian hair gets naturally from years in the sun. It’s had a viral moment recently, but it isn’t new. Colourists have been using versions of this for years to freshen a hairline without touching the rest of the head.

This is what it actually is, how it’s done, and whether it’s likely to suit you.

Got a question before you go any further? Message us on WhatsApp — ask anything you like. No appointment, nothing booked, just an answer.

What it actually is.

A fine section of hair along your hairline, no more than half an inch, lightened freehand — no foils — one or two shades brighter than the rest of your colour. It’s usually added right at the end of an existing colour appointment, once your highlights or balayage have already developed, done quickly at the basin before your final rinse.

The processing time is short on purpose. The whole point is subtlety: a soft brightness at the hairline, not a stripe of contrast. Overdone, it stops looking like sun and starts looking like a technique.

Who it suits.

Anyone already having their colour done who wants a bit more brightness right around the face, without lightening the whole head. It works across blondes, brunettes and redheads — the amount of lift is simply kept more subtle on darker bases so it doesn’t fight the rest of your colour. It also tends to be genuinely flattering across most face shapes, since it’s a soft curve of light rather than a defined block.

Who it doesn’t.

If you’re after a bold, obvious change, this isn’t it — by design, it’s meant to look barely-there. If you want that kind of definition around your face, a proper face-framing highlight or a money piece will give you more contrast to work with.

How it compares to other face-framing techniques.

It’s easy to lump this in with regular face-framing highlights, but it’s a different thing. Face-framing highlights and a money piece use chunkier, more defined sections placed with foils, for a bolder, more noticeable result. A Scandi hairline works only on the very finest baby hairs, freehand, for something closer to what the sun would do rather than what a colourist has clearly done.

If you’re weighing the two up, it’s worth a look at our piece on money piece highlights to see where they differ.

Booking it, and what it costs.

This isn’t a standalone appointment — it’s added on to an existing colour service, so we’re not going to quote a single fixed price here. What it costs depends on what you’re already having done and how much lift your base colour needs. Mention it when you book, or bring it up at your consultation, and you’ll have a clear price before anything happens. Our current price list is always kept up to date if you want a general steer first.

Online booking is at wisteriaavenue.co.uk/bookings, or call us Tuesday to Saturday on 01235 534705. WhatsApp the same number if it’s easier.
