Colour Correction FAQ's

What is a colour correction?

Colour corrections are a specialised hair colour service that looks to fix colour issues caused by at-home or or in-salon colour issues. Whether it’s brassy tones, uneven colour, poor foil placement or just unwanted results. Every colour correction is different and can present its own challenges. Our job is to transform your hair while preserving its health.

Each colour correction carries with it a consultation to determine likes, dislikes and what you are hoping to achieve. More comprehensively our consultations help your stylist to explore your specific hair needs and desired outcomes. At this stage communication is really important in order to discuss all aspects of the process, including necessary steps against realistic outcomes. Consultations are desired to greatly assist you and your stylist equally to ensure confidence.

Some colour corrections are more straightforward than others, particularly when the health of hair is more compromised than others. Health of hair always comes first which can make certain desired outcomes more challenging that can require more patience and a lengthier timeline is then required. Health always prioritised colour and in this case we offer personalised hair care plans and routines to help you towards your end goal of health hair and a great colour!

Every client’s hair is unique, which is why our colour corrections are never a set formula and rarely ever fit the same identical mould. Any colour correction is designed to suit your hair type, current condition, and desired look. Our goal is to create aa beautiful hair colour that complements your features and style, ensuring you leave the salon with a look that you’ll love.

If you’re ready to correct a hair colour, Wisteria Avenue Hair Salon is here to help! Book your appointment today and let us bring your dream hair to life!

Why is a colour correction needed?

A colour correction is needed when your current hair colour isn’t right. This might be due to an at-home dye job gone wrong, overlapping colour appointments, or unexpected results from previous salon treatments. You might have ended up with uneven tones, patchy highlights, unwanted brassy tones, or a shade that’s simply too dark or too light for your complexion. Hair colour correction is essential in these cases to fix the colour and restore balance and vibrancy.

Common reasons people seek a colour correction include:

  • Blonde hair turning orange or yellow
  • Brunette hair looking muddy or too dark
  • Unwanted green or red undertones
  • Overprocessed hair with overlapping colours
  • Harsh root regrowth lines or banding

What is the difference between a colour correction and any other colour?

The key difference between a colour correction and any other hair colour service being that a colour correction is a highly tailored, specialist process that aims to correct and repair existing colour issues before your desired colour can be achieve. ‘Normal’ hair colour appointments apply colours to healthy and consistent hair and are considering starting services or maintenance appointments. For example, if you have a balayage already and six months later you return to have a balayage, this will be a hair salons bread and butter. A colour correction might be able to achieve a balayage, , rather than simply applying a new colour. A standard hair colour appointment might involve root touch-ups, glossing, or an all-over shade change on a healthy canvas. By contrast, colour correction deals with previous colour build-up, damage, or inconsistencies.

It often involves multiple techniques such as colour stripping, pre-pigmenting, neutralising tones, or even gradual lightening over several sessions. This is not a one-size-fits-all approach—it’s designed to fix specific problems and often takes more time and expertise than a typical colour appointment.

What does a colour correction do to your hair?

A colour correction isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to correcting your hair colour and most hair colour correctional appointments will differ either in a big or small way. However typically colour corrections cover the following:

  • Remove or neutralise unwanted tones
  • Add missing pigment to improve colour depth
  • Lighten overly dark hair gradually
  • Blend out patchy or uneven colour
  • Restore a previous hair colour

It’s too worth noting that colour corrections can involve a combination of lightening, removing colour build up, toning, and conditioning treatments to protect the hair while making adjustments. We typically use a Four Step Treatment by JOICO which can greatly improve the integrity of hair, ensure that your hair feels healthier and looks better.

What is the downside to a colour correction?

Colour corrections are sometimes necessary and colour appointments are not as straightforward as an application of just one colour or simply ‘highlight’s. While colour corrections can be highly effective, it’s important to consider the following:

  • Time: The time that a colour correction can take is typically longer than a ‘normal’ hair appointment. Colour corrections are commonly in excess of four hours and some times can span more than a day to achieve the desired look.
  • Cost: Colour corrections are both time and product heavy. In many cases they don’t ‘fit’ an obvious service and comprise of many different hairdressing techniques and services all-in-one. For this reason whilst they can prove more expensive than most hair colouring services, salons generally won’t be in a position to quote until they understand your motives, desired look and starting point.
  • Condition: If your hair may already be damaged, your hair may require treating before undertaking any extensive colour treatments.
  • Aligning expectations: Colour corrections requires patience. Most colour corrections are darker colours which have been applied using box colours. Transitioning can be a patient process.

What does a colour correction cost?

The cost of a colour correction varies depending on the extent of the issue and the techniques required. At Wisteria Avenue, our pricing is based on the time and work involved, not just a set menu.

Unlike other traditional types of hair colouring, there is not an average for colour correction work. Prices can vary so significantly and are largely dependent upon what is required. For every client that visits, the process, time, starting point, length, volume of hair, resistance, colour history, product usage, work required and end result will differ from one to the next. That being said our in-salon consultations are designed to breakdown what the appropriate steps are to achieve your desired colour all whilst working to a budget and offering transparent advice as much as possible.

Your Questions,
Answered.

Colour correction appointments are strictly by consultation only. These appointments are difficult to product and are not a one-size-fits-all for every client.

If you are unsure where to start, call or send a WhatsApp to 01235 534705.

Email inquiries are also welcome at [email protected] (please provide a contact number in your email).

Every hair colour service, whether it’s colour correction or not, requires both a skin test and consultation. These essential steps ensure the safety of the colouring process and ascertain its suitability for your needs.

Consequently, a consultation ensures you select the optimal service tailored to your preferences. Occasionally, clients book services that might not align with their requirements, and a consultation helps shed light on the best options.

Colour correction aren’t the same for every client.

We don’t expect clients to know the terminology of every type of colour correction! However, pictures always help. If you have a vision in mind, we encourage you to bring this with you to your consultation.

We don’t assume clients to be familiar with all hair colour terms! However, visual references are invaluable. If you have a specific look in mind, we highly recommend bringing pictures to your consultation.

We occasionally run promotional offers and discounts for select hair colour and haircut services.

These often carry a timeframe before they are invalid and are at the discretion of the salon.

Usually these do not run across December, however if you are unsure please check with the hair salon before booking.

All our Stylists are at least 10 years qualified.

Our consultations typically help to indicate whether what you are looking for is both achievable and deliverable in one session.

Part of the value of a consultation is to better understand what your hair looks like in person, how it feels when touched and what the history of the hair is.

Sometimes discussing outcomes is more helpful when helping clients to understand what work is needed and what is required to achieve your hair goals.

It’s possible, though much of the time your Stylist won’t be able to provide accurate answers to questions around colour until they can understand how it feels, what it looks like and what the history of the hair is.
