How to stop hair loss

Hair Loss in Women: An Honest Guide

Hair loss is far more common in women than people often realise, and it can be genuinely distressing. There’s a lot of advice online — some of it helpful, some of it not — so this is a calm, honest overview from the team at Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon. One thing first: we’re hairdressers, not doctors, so this post is about understanding hair loss and where to get the right help, not about diagnosing or treating it.

Why women lose hair

Hair loss in women can have many causes, and they’re not always obvious. Genetics, hormonal changes — including those around pregnancy and menopause — thyroid and other medical conditions, stress, and significant changes in diet or health can all play a part. Because the causes are so varied, there’s no single explanation that fits everyone, and that’s exactly why getting a proper assessment matters rather than guessing.

Clearing up some myths

A few common beliefs are worth correcting honestly:

  • “Only men lose their hair.” Not true — hair loss affects many women, for the range of reasons above. It’s just less openly talked about.
  • “Women’s hair loss is always permanent.” Also not true. Depending on the cause, some hair loss is temporary or treatable — which is another reason to find out the cause rather than assume the worst.
  • “Hats and hair products cause hair loss.” Mostly a myth — but with one real exception. Consistently tight hairstyles that pull on the hair can, over time, cause a type of hair loss known as traction alopecia, which can become lasting. Everyday product use and hats won’t cause permanent loss.

Where to get the right help

This is the most important part. If you’re noticing hair loss, the right first step is a medical one — a GP, a pharmacist, or a trichologist (a specialist in hair and scalp conditions). They can help identify the cause and talk you through appropriate options. Please be cautious of treatments, supplements and “miracle” products marketed online; some are ineffective, and some medicines are not suitable for women at all. Anything medical should come from a qualified professional who knows your situation — not from a blog, and not from us.

What a salon can genuinely help with

Once the medical side is being looked after, there’s a real role for a good salon — in helping you feel like yourself. That can mean a cut and style chosen to work with finer or thinning hair and make the most of what you have, advice on gentle styling that avoids unnecessary tension, or styling techniques that create the appearance of fullness. For more significant hair loss, we also offer hair replacement systems, and we’re always happy to talk honestly and privately about what might suit you.
