What Is the Best Haircut for My Face Shape?

Choosing a new haircut can feel overwhelming — there are so many styles to consider, and what looks wonderful on someone else won’t necessarily suit you. One of the most useful starting points is your face shape. The right cut works with the proportions of your face to enhance your natural features, so here’s an honest guide from the team at Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon to the five main face shapes and the cuts that tend to flatter them.

How to find your face shape

Most faces fall into one of five broad shapes: round, oval, square, heart or oblong. They’re a guide rather than a rule — plenty of people sit somewhere between two — but knowing roughly where you fall makes choosing a cut far easier. If you’re not sure, your stylist can help identify it in seconds.

Round face

For a rounder face, the aim is usually to add a little length and definition. Longer layered cuts that fall below the chin help draw the eye downwards and elongate the face. Soft, side-swept bangs work well too, adding shape without closing in the face.

Oval face

The oval face is the most versatile of the lot — its balanced proportions mean it can carry almost any cut. A long, blunt style with minimal layers shows off the face’s natural symmetry beautifully, but there’s genuine freedom here to experiment with length and style.

Square face

A square face has lovely strong angles, and the aim is often to soften them rather than hide them. Soft, textured layers help do that, and a shoulder-length lob — a longer bob — with subtle layering creates a balanced, flattering shape.

Heart-shaped face

A heart-shaped face is wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin, so cuts that bring focus to the cheekbones and jawline work well. A classic layered bob does this nicely, and longer side-swept bangs are a lovely way to frame the eyes and cheekbones.

Oblong face

For a longer, oblong face, the goal is to create a sense of width and balance. A layered cut falling just above the shoulders helps, and bangs — particularly ones that sit around the eyebrows — visually shorten the face and add softness.

Use it as a guide, not a rulebook

Face shape is a genuinely useful starting point, but it’s only one factor — your hair type, lifestyle and personal taste all matter just as much. Don’t let it box you in. The best results come from talking it through with a stylist who can look at the whole picture. If a fringe is part of the look you’re considering, our post on getting a fringe is worth a read, and you can see more about our cuts on our haircuts and styles page.
