Wedding & Occasion Hair-Up in Abingdon: Trials & Timings

The Wisteria Avenue Journal

Occasion and bridal hair in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

There’s a particular kind of appointment we love: the one booked for a day that matters. A wedding, a christening, a milestone birthday, the ball or the races. Clients across Abingdon and Oxfordshire come to us for everyday cuts and colour all year round, but occasion hair is its own craft — and it’s worth understanding how it works before you book, so the day itself is the easy part.

A hair-up isn’t just a dressed-up version of your usual blow-dry. It’s a style built to be photographed from every angle, to hold through a long and emotional day, and to sit right with your outfit, your neckline and any veil or accessory. Getting that right is far less about luck than people think, and far more about planning.

What an occasion hair-up actually involves.

More than a normal styling appointment. For occasion hair we’re working towards a fixed date and a fixed look, often months ahead, and usually alongside a dress, a veil or hair pieces we need to build around. The style has to survive hugging relatives, a warm marquee and a little British weather; it has to frame your face in photographs you’ll keep forever; and if there’s a comb or veil involved, we need to know exactly where it sits and how it comes out later. None of that can be improvised in twenty minutes on the morning — which is precisely why the trial matters.

Why it starts with a trial.

The trial is where the day is really won. It’s your chance to see the style on your own hair, change your mind with no pressure, and let us solve anything in advance — fine hair that won’t hold a curl, a fringe you hate off your face, a veil that needs to lift out cleanly. We’d always recommend a trial for weddings, ideally around six to eight weeks before, close to when your colour and length will be as they’ll be on the day. Book a consultation and we’ll plan yours around your date.

When to book — a simple timeline.

The thing we hear most is “I wish I’d booked sooner.” As a rough guide for wedding hair: secure the date six to nine months ahead, especially for summer Saturdays, which fill first; have your trial six to eight weeks before; take a final cut and colour refresh two to three weeks before; and on the morning itself, styling only, because every decision has already been made. For a less formal occasion you can compress all of that into a single appointment a week or two ahead — but if the look really matters to you, a short trial is never wasted.

The honest bit.

If your hair is very fine or simply won’t hold a set, tell us at the trial rather than hoping on the day — it’s a solvable problem, but only if we know in advance. The same goes for a big change: growing out a fringe or adding length with clip-ins is far better planned early than sprung on us the morning of. And for a bridal party, share your numbers as soon as you can, so we can build a schedule that gets everyone ready in the right order with no one rushed.

What does occasion hair cost?

A hair-up is quoted by the style and your hair length, and a trial is booked separately from the day itself, so we’ll confirm everything clearly before anything goes in the diary. There is no fixed-cost to a hair trial, they are tailored to suit you! Most clients book two hairs and we simply charge for our time (it’s not too dissimilar to paying for two one-hair haircuts) plus any additional costs.
