Tints and all-over colour in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.

A tint — also called all-over colour, block colour, or full head colour — is a single shade applied evenly to the entire head, root to tip. It’s the most uniform colour service we offer: no streaks, no gradients, just one solid colour throughout. Tints are the right choice for full grey coverage, for a clean colour change (lighter or darker), or for clients who want the predictability of one consistent shade rather than the lived-in variation of balayage or highlights.

How it differs from balayage and highlights: balayage is hand-painted and soft, growing out invisibly over months; highlights are foiled streaks that lift specific sections; a tint is uniform throughout. Tints give the most complete coverage of grey, the most controllable colour, and the most visible regrowth — because the contrast between your root colour and the tinted lengths becomes clear within four to six weeks. Each has trade-offs; we’d rather book you the right one than the most expensive one.

Call or WhatsApp 01235 534705 if you’d like to talk through whether a tint is the right choice for you.

The variants we offer.

The three most common tint bookings:

Full head tint. Colour applied from root to tip across the whole head. The most common first-time tint booking, and the right service if you’re changing colour entirely or you’ve never had a salon colour before.

Tint regrowth. Maintenance for clients who already have a tint and need the roots brought back up to match. Cheaper and faster than a full head; usually booked every four to six weeks.

T-section tint. A regrowth-equivalent for clients who don’t need a full head retouch — colour applied at the parting and the most visible regrowth lines. The lightest commitment for maintenance.

Pricing varies by which booking and your hair length; see our price list, or get a firm figure at consultation.

Permanent vs semi-permanent colour.

The default at Wisteria is a permanent tint — it doesn’t wash out, it grows out. That’s the right choice for grey coverage and for any colour change you want to last. We also offer semi-permanent colour, which gradually fades over six to twelve washes. Semi-permanent is best for fashion tones, for testing a new colour before committing, or for refreshing tone between full appointments. If you’re not sure which suits, the consultation works it out — most clients leave with a clearer idea of what they actually want.

The honest part: what tints commit you to.

Tints are a more “trapping” service than balayage or highlights. Here’s what that means in practice:

Going back to natural takes time. Once you’ve tinted, you have two routes back to your natural colour: grow it out (which means several months of visible regrowth as your natural colour returns), or colour correction (a longer salon process that can be expensive). Most clients are happy with the commitment once they understand it, but it’s worth knowing before your first appointment.

Regrowth is more visible. Because the contrast between your roots and the tinted lengths is sharp, regrowth becomes visible faster than with balayage or highlights. Most tint clients come back every four to six weeks for a regrowth top-up.

Box dye stacks. If you’ve been using box dye at home, tell us at the consultation. Different box dyes leave different chemical residues that can interfere with how a salon colour takes, and we’ll need to plan around that. Honesty here saves both of us time.

Home care matters. Colour-safe shampoo (sulphate-free works best), heat protection when styling, and UV protection in summer all extend your tint’s life. Tinted hair generally looks shinier than untreated hair when it’s well maintained, but neglected colour fades visibly faster than balayage or highlights. We stock JOICO products in salon and can recommend what suits your hair specifically.

Grey coverage.

Tints give the most complete grey coverage of any colour service, which is why they’re the most common choice for clients with significant grey. We use specific grey-coverage formulations where appropriate, and the resulting colour holds against grey better than other approaches.

If you’d prefer a softer transition that blends with your grey rather than covering it fully, highlights or balayage are worth considering instead — they grow out without a sharp line as the grey returns. There’s also a growing trend of clients who want to grow into their grey naturally and use colour only on the existing tinted lengths; we do this regularly. The consultation is where we work out what makes sense for you.

Skin test and consultation.

Every colour service at Wisteria requires a free consultation and a skin test before we can apply colour. This isn’t optional or paperwork — it’s a manufacturer requirement, and it protects you from allergic reactions to PPD and other reactive ingredients found in permanent colour. If you’ve never had a salon colour before, the NHS has guidance on what to expect from cosmetic procedures including hair dye allergies. If you’re expecting or nursing, it’s also worth reading our advice on hair dye during pregnancy and breastfeeding before you book.

The skin test takes about two minutes — we apply a small amount of the colour formulation behind your ear and ask you to leave it for 48 hours before your colour appointment. We use JOICO for our colour work, so the test uses the actual formulation we’ll be applying.

Booking your appointment.

If it’s your first colour with us, please book the consultation at least 48 hours before you want the colour itself — the skin test needs that window to clear. If you’ve had a tint with us within the last six months, you don’t need a fresh skin test and can book the colour directly.

Your Questions, Answered

Frequently asked.

What's the difference between a tint, a balayage and highlights?+

A tint is a single colour applied evenly to the entire head, root to tip. Balayage is hand-painted lightening that creates a soft, lived-in look with very gradual regrowth. Highlights are streaks of lighter colour woven through the hair. Tints give the most uniform, "all one colour" finish; balayage gives the most natural, low-maintenance look; highlights sit somewhere between the two. The right choice depends on what you want and how much regrowth maintenance you're happy with.

How long does a tint last between appointments?+

Root regrowth typically becomes visible at the four to six week mark, depending on how fast your hair grows and how dramatic the colour change is. Most clients book a root touch-up every four to eight weeks. The tint itself doesn't fade dramatically — it's the new growth at the roots that drives the appointment cycle, not the colour washing out.

Can a tint cover grey hair completely?+

Yes — tints give the most complete grey coverage of any colour service, which is why they're the most common choice for clients with significant grey. We use specific grey-coverage formulations where appropriate. If you'd prefer a softer transition that blends with your grey rather than covering it fully, balayage or highlights are worth considering instead.

Will a tint damage my hair?+

Any chemical colour service has some impact, but a well-applied tint with good aftercare keeps damage minimal. Modern colour formulations are much gentler than older products. We assess your hair's condition at consultation and won't proceed if we think it would cause real problems. Conditioning treatments and moisture-based shampoos help significantly between appointments.

I've been using box dye at home — can I switch to a salon tint?+

Often yes, but it needs more careful planning than a fresh-start tint. Box dye behaves unpredictably in salon, particularly when you want to go lighter — the colour build-up on your hair from previous applications can produce uneven results. We'd strongly recommend a consultation and probably a strand test before the appointment itself. In some cases we'll advise waiting for the box dye to grow out, or a colour correction first.

Can I go back to my natural colour after tinting?+

Two routes: grow it out, which means several months of visible regrowth as your natural colour returns; or colour correction, which is a longer salon process and can be expensive. This isn't a reason not to tint — most clients are happy with the commitment once they understand it — but it's worth knowing before your first appointment, because tinting is a more "trapping" service than highlights or balayage.

Do I need a consultation before booking a tint?+

For first-time clients, yes — and also for any client whose hair history has changed significantly since their last visit. The consultation lets us assess your hair, agree on the shade, and run a skin test if needed (legally required before any colour service). For regular touch-ups with the same shade, no consultation is needed — you just book the appointment.

How much does a tint cost?+

Pricing depends on hair length, density, and whether it's a full application or a root touch-up. Full prices are on our price list at wisteriaavenue.co.uk/price-list, and we'll confirm the specific figure for your hair at consultation.
