Men’s hair replacement systems in Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
For many men, hair loss isn’t just a physical change — it affects confidence, self-image, and how you feel walking into a room. If you’ve been thinking about doing something about it but aren’t sure where to start, or you’ve looked into transplants and want a less invasive alternative, a men’s hair system could be the right answer.
At Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon, we specialise in men’s hair replacement systems. We offer honest, straightforward advice in a private, relaxed setting — no pressure, no hard sell, and no expectation that you know anything about hair systems before you walk through the door. Our first-floor salon is dedicated entirely to hair system appointments, giving you a discreet, one-on-one environment where you can ask anything and take your time.
We offer a free, no-obligation consultation to every new client. Call or WhatsApp us on 01235 534705 to get started.
What is a men’s hair system?
A men’s hair system is a non-surgical solution for hair loss — whether that’s male pattern baldness, alopecia, or general thinning (the NHS page on hair loss is a useful starting point if you want the medical background on the underlying causes). It’s a natural-looking system, colour-matched and tailored to you individually, that blends seamlessly with your existing hair.
Modern hair systems are a world away from what you might be imagining. They’re lightweight, durable, and completely undetectable in everyday life — at work, at the gym, or out socially. They can be cut and styled just like natural hair, and they’re designed to be worn with confidence and no second thoughts.
Unlike a hair transplant, a hair system requires no surgery, no downtime, no medication, and no waiting months to see results. You leave your first appointment with a full head of hair.
Will it feel like my own hair?
This is one of the most common questions we get. The honest answer: there’s a brief adjustment period — the first few days, you’ll be aware of it because everything new takes some getting used to — but after that, the vast majority of clients tell us it stops feeling like a “thing” and starts feeling like their hair. The clearest indicator we have that the day-to-day experience works is that almost every client who tries a system continues to maintain it routinely, long-term.
There are some practical adaptations — how you wash your hair, the products you use, sleeping habits — and we walk you through all of it at your first appointment. None of it is dramatic; most clients are surprised at how quickly it becomes routine.
How long does a hair system last?
On average, a well-maintained hair system lasts around six months, though some clients get up to nine months from theirs. Longevity depends largely on how well you follow the aftercare guidance and how consistently you attend your maintenance appointments. Clients who stick to their schedule and look after their system at home get the best results.
Maintenance appointments are every three to four weeks. Leaving longer gaps can lead to deterioration that takes more time to correct — so regular visits genuinely make a difference.
Colour-matched vs custom-made systems.
There are two types of hair system:
Colour-matched systems are available within approximately two weeks and are suitable for the majority of clients. They’re matched precisely to your existing hair colour and blend naturally with what you already have. For most men, this option is more than sufficient — and it’s considerably more cost-effective.
Custom-made systems are for clients with specific requirements — a particular natural parting, a double crown, specific greying patterns, or anything that needs a more precise solution. These take up to three months to produce but offer an exceptional level of detail. We’ll talk you through which option suits you at your consultation.
Can my hair system have highlights or be coloured?
Hair systems can’t be coloured after they’re made — but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with one solid block of colour. If you want highlights, lowlights, balayage-style effects, or a specific greying pattern, we can have a custom system manufactured with that look built in from the start. Interestingly, this often works out only marginally more expensive than colouring virgin hair on top of a standard system — and the result is more natural and longer-lasting because the colour is part of the system rather than applied to it.
If colour is important to you, raise it at consultation and we’ll talk through what’s achievable.
What does the appointment process look like?
Consultation. Before anything else, we sit down and talk. We go through your hair history, what you’re hoping to achieve, colour options, styles, ongoing maintenance, and what the appointment itself involves. We also use this stage to establish whether a hair system is genuinely right for you — occasionally a client would be better served by a different approach, and we’ll always be upfront about that.
Colour matching. This happens during your consultation. We work through your preferences and identify the best system for your desired result.
Application appointment. Your first application appointment takes approximately three hours and takes place in our private first-floor salon. We begin with a secondary consultation, prepare your scalp with a precise template, cleanse it thoroughly, and apply the hair system using a skin-friendly adhesive. We then cut and style your hair — blending the system with your natural hair to create a consistent, natural-looking result.
Cutting a hair system requires specialist technique. Not every stylist or barber is trained to do it, and getting the cut right is what makes the difference between a result that looks natural and one that doesn’t. Our stylists are experienced in exactly this. You leave the appointment with a full head of hair and no downtime required.
Ongoing maintenance. Every three to four weeks, you’ll come back in for a maintenance appointment. These keep your system looking its best and give us the chance to address anything before it becomes an issue.
Before and after.
The example below is from a recent client, shared with permission. The before shot was taken at consultation; the after shot was taken at the end of the same first application appointment.
What does a hair system cost?
Hair systems at Wisteria Avenue typically range from £350 to £650 depending on the type of system, hair length, colour, and your individual starting point. Custom-made systems sit at the higher end of that range; colour-matched systems are more accessible. For context, surgical hair transplants generally start from around £3,000 — and come with no guarantee of results.
The best way to get an accurate idea of cost for your specific situation is to come in for a free consultation. Our full price list is on a separate page.
A note on discretion.
Discretion is the single thing we’re most often thanked for, and it’s something we’ve built into the service from the ground up. Hair system appointments take place exclusively on our first floor — a separate, enclosed space away from the main salon floor, with its own access. Appointments are one-on-one as standard. You won’t be sitting next to someone getting a colour done. You won’t be visible from the street. You won’t be on display.
Many of our clients find that once they’re in the chair, it quickly starts to feel like any other hair appointment. We walk you through every step in plain English, explain what we’re doing and why, and make sure you leave understanding exactly how to look after your system and get the most from it.
Why choose a hair system over surgery?
Surgery is a personal decision and it’s right for some people. But there are compelling reasons why many men choose a hair system instead:
No surgery, no risk. Hair transplants carry the possibility of scarring, the hair not taking, and a significant recovery period. Hair systems carry none of those risks.
Immediate results. A transplant can take twelve months or more to show results — and there’s no guarantee. A hair system works from day one.
Cost. Systems start from around £350. Surgery typically starts from around £3,000.
Flexibility. If your circumstances change or you decide it’s not for you, you simply stop. There’s no permanent commitment.
Where we serve — Oxfordshire and beyond.
Most of our hair system clients travel to us from across Oxfordshire and the surrounding counties — Abingdon, Oxford, Didcot, Wantage, and further afield from Reading, Swindon, and Banbury. The first-floor setup, the experience of our stylists, and the level of discretion mean it’s worth the journey, and our clients tell us that consistently.
If you’re based in a specific town and want to know what travelling to us looks like from where you are, we have dedicated pages for several catchment areas: men’s hair systems in Oxford, Reading, Swindon, and Banbury.
