What Are Balayage Foils?
Balayage foils combine the hand-painting technique of balayage with the use of foils for added precision and definition. In traditional balayage, the colourist applies lightener directly onto the hair in the open air, with no foils. Foilayage instead places each painted section into a foil before processing. That extra step gives the colourist more control over where the lightener sits and how saturated it is, for a more uniform, consistent set of highlights.
The Foilayage Process
The process starts with sectioning the hair and placing individual sections onto foils. The colourist applies lightener with a sweeping motion to create soft, blended highlights, and the foils isolate each highlighted section — preventing the lightener from bleeding onto surrounding hair and keeping the application clean and precise. Once the desired level of lift is reached, the foils come out, and the hair is rinsed and toned to finish the result.
Greater Precision
The main benefit of foilayage is precision. By isolating and containing each highlighted section, the colourist achieves more consistent, uniform results than open-air balayage allows. That control over placement and saturation means highlights that are seamlessly blended and evenly distributed through the hair.
